The elegance and freshness of a Pessac-Léognan Grand Cru Classé
The estate
Founded in 1850 by Madame Arnaud Ricard, Château Malartic-Lagravière is an iconic name in the Bordeaux region. The estate covers 73 hectares of vineyards and stands out for its rare dual classification for both its red and white wines, awarded in 1953. Today, the property is passionately run by the Bonnie family, more specifically by Véronique and Jean-Jacques Bonnie. They uphold the excellence of this cru by combining respect for tradition with modern environmental practices to showcase this historic terroir.
The vineyard
Located in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, the terroir lies on a plateau of well-drained Quaternary gravel over a subsoil of clay and shelly limestone. The vines, with an average age of 28 to 30 years, benefit from a high planting density. The estate is certified High Environmental Value (HVE 3) and ISO 14001, favouring an agroecological approach with minimal tillage, eco-grazing and the use of horses.
The vintage
The year was marked by contrasting weather conditions, ending with a beautiful Indian summer. The cool nights and warm days at the end of the season allowed the various grape varieties to reach optimal phenolic ripeness while preserving lovely freshness.
Vinification and ageing
The grapes for Château Malartic-Lagravière 2023 are harvested by hand with rigorous sorting, including a pass over a double sorting table and optical sorting. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats and wooden vats for around three weeks, using the double pumping-over technique for controlled extraction. The wine is then aged on fine lees in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new, with early blending of the lots.
Grape varieties
53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc.
