The estate

An 1855 Premier Cru Classé of the AOC Sauternes, Château Suduiraut boasts 92 hectares devoted to the vine. Bordering the vineyards of Château d'Yquem, Château Suduiraut is a 17th century property whose gardens were designed by André Le Nôtre. The estate is best known for its golden wines, produced through strict and very precise plot selections.

The vineyard

The 91-hectare vineyard of the estate is planted in gravelly and sandy clay soils and certified for High Environmental Value. This well-draining and lean soil pushes the vine to stretch its roots deep into the terroir, resulting in wines with a strong character. The 35-year-old vines are cultivated according to the principles of sustainable farming.

The vintage

The 2020 vintage offered very beautiful grapes, which provided great elegance and quality excellence to this wine from Château Suduiraut. The year opened with a very rainy and particularly mild winter, which led to an early bud break for the vines. Despite cooler temperatures at the end of March, the vines continued to slowly mature. The good weather returned in July and summer turned out to be very dry and hot. A few rainy spells in mid-August revived the ripening, which concluded, under ideal conditions, around 10 days earlier than usual.

The winemaking and ageing

Healthy and rich plots were harvested during picking season, which began on 16 September and ended on 5 November. After precision winemaking, 50% of the wine ages in new barrels and the other 50% in barrels of one previous wine for 16 to 20 months.

Tasting

The 2020 Château Suduiraut is a wine of great precision and formidable complexity. With time, its beautiful sunlike colour also presents sublime, amber nuances. Custom-made, this wine batch has excellent ageing potential. The perfect harmony of floral and fruity aromas, paired with touches of candied grapes and roasted foods, gives superb power to this great wine.
