Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Corton Grand Cru "Vergennes" 2023 by Domaine du Château de Meursault

Tasting

Appearance
The wine reveals a brilliant golden-yellow hue, enhanced by green highlights that intensify in the weeks following bottling.

Nose
Highly expressive from an early age, the nose exhales enticing aromas of yellow fruits, such as white peach and ripe pear, lifted by subtle citrus notes of lemon and lime. Barrel ageing brings a lovely complexity with hints of vanilla, almond and toasted bread.

Palate
Broad and fleshy, the palate seduces with its richness and its silky, buttery texture. This generosity is perfectly balanced by a beautifully fresh tension and a saline minerality. The finish, of remarkable length, lingers on notes of stone fruits, citrus zest and gentle spices.

Food and wine pairings

This white wine pairs wonderfully with dishes in creamy sauces, such as veal piccata or poultry, as well as with white fish in beurre blanc. It also elevates seafood, particularly oysters, and harmonises perfectly with goat's cheeses or a well-matured Mont d'Or.

Serving and cellaring

For an optimal tasting experience, it is recommended to store this Corton Grand Cru "Vergennes" 2023 in a place sheltered from light, at a constant temperature between 10 and 15°C. While it can be enjoyed in its youth between 2026 and 2032, its structure allows it to evolve in the cellar until around 2039.

The mineral expression of a Burgundy cru by Domaine du Château de Meursault

The estate

Founded in 1011 with the granting of the Moulin Foulot fief, the Domaine du Château de Meursault is a historic figure of Burgundy. Located on the Côte de Beaune, the estate today extends across a vast vineyard of 65 hectares. Acquired in 2012 by the Halley family, the domaine is currently run by Olivier Halley, alongside Stéphane Follin-Arbelet. Under their leadership, the château has taken a major environmental turn, obtaining organic farming certification while continuing to produce wines renowned for their fidelity to the terroir.

The vineyard

This wine comes from the "Vergennes" climat, a small plot of 18.20 ares located on the prestigious hillside of Corton. Facing east and south-east on the mid-slope, the vines planted in 1970 flourish on a shallow soil, extremely chalky and stony, composed of Jurassic scree. This singular geological configuration, cultivated using organic farming, forces the roots to draw deeply from the rock, giving the wine its signature minerality.

The vintage

The year 2023 was marked by strong climatic contrasts. After a cool, grey start to the season, bud break occurred in early April. Flowering suffered from unstable conditions, resulting in coulure and millerandage. However, the summer was particularly hot, with a long heatwave from early June to early July, followed by another wave of extreme heat in early September. These historic temperatures accelerated ripening, but generous yields helped preserve the natural acidity of the berries.

Winemaking and ageing

The grapes destined for this Corton Grand Cru "Vergennes" 2023 are hand-harvested in small crates and then carefully sorted. A long and gradual pressing is followed by a static settling of twelve hours. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in oak barrels for around fifteen days. The wine then benefits from ageing of 15 to 18 months in barrels (including 35% new casks and 65% one- to two-year-old casks), accompanied by regular bâtonnage to enrich its texture before the final blending and bottling.

Grape variety

This wine is made exclusively from Chardonnay.
