Nicolas Greinacher

Orange rind, dried violets and spicy tones introduce the fragrant 2023 Côte-Rôtie Mon Village. This medium-bodied and rounded red offers an early glimpse of the potential Stéphane Ogier achieved in Côte-Rôtie in 2023, following through with outstanding finesse and notable persistence on the concentrated finish.

The classic, entry-level cuvée here, the 2023 Côte Rôtie Mon Village sports a deep, saturated hue as well as terrific aromatics of red and black fruits, spice, flowers, and hints of leather. It's medium to full-bodied, round, and seamless, with the classic suppleness and sexiness of this vintage. It's impossible to resist today, yet given its overall balance, I see no reason this shouldn't keep for 15 years. Drink 2026-2041.

I must confess that I approached the 2023 Côte-Rôtie Mon Village without particular expectation, yet it proved one of the more arresting surprises of the tasting. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of mocha, freshly ground coffee, dark berries and spices, subtly framed by oak, it is medium- to full-bodied, layered and finely textured. A fleshy core of fruit is supported by velvety tannins, leading into a perfumed, lively finish redolent of licorice, violets and dark berries. Introverted at first, it gains amplitude and definition with air, concluding on a note that is both flamboyant and precise. Kudos!

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Côte-Rôtie "Mon Village" 2023 Domaine Stéphane Ogier

Tasting notes

Colour
The colour reveals an appealing ruby red hue with violet nuances, showing lovely youthfulness and visual depth without being overly dark.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with notes of small red and black fruits, dominated by blackcurrant. It is then enriched with delicate floral touches, herbaceous accents reminiscent of mint, as well as nuances of tapenade, all underpinned by a lovely minerality.

Palate
On the palate, this red wine offers a rich texture and a sensation of ripe, juicy fruit. The structure stands out for its elegance and finesse, carried by silky tannins. The whole retains a lovely acidity that stretches the finish with dynamism and persistence.

Food and wine pairing
The estate suggests pairing this wine with duck paupiettes, confit of lamb shoulder or a venison stew. More generally, it will pair wonderfully with grilled meats, such as beef or lamb, as well as with Mediterranean-inspired dishes seasoned with herbes de Provence.

Service and storage
This Côte-Rôtie "Mon Village" 2023 can be enjoyed in its youth, but it also has excellent aging potential, allowing it to be cellared until around 2038.

The elegance and precision of a great red wine from the Rhône Valley

The estate
Located in Ampuis, in the heart of the Rhône Valley, Domaine Stéphane Ogier is one of the emblematic figures of its appellation. While the family heritage spans seven generations, the estate's independent history truly began in 1983 when Michel Ogier decided to bottle his own wines. Now run by his son, Stéphane Ogier, the estate has grown from just a few hectares into an extensive vineyard. Drawing on his training in Burgundy, the current owner introduced a philosophy centered on plot-by-plot winemaking, elevating the estate among the most highly regarded producers in the region.

The vineyard
The grapes for this cuvée come from plots within the Côte-Rôtie appellation, spread across the Côte Blonde and the Côte Brune. The vines, aged between five and thirty years, thrive on steep terraced slopes, making manual labor essential. Facing south and southeast, this terroir benefits from varied soils, blending granite and gneiss with iron oxide-rich mica-schists. The estate favors sustainable viticulture, including the use of horse plowing on certain plots.

The vintage
The year 2023 was marked by demanding climatic conditions, including a heatwave in August. These weather challenges required rigorous, meticulous work in the vineyards to preserve the balance of the berries and bring the growing cycle to completion under the best possible conditions.

Winemaking and aging
After a thorough double sorting, the vinification of the Côte-Rôtie "Mon Village" 2023 includes 20% whole clusters, with the rest destemmed. A cold maceration in stainless steel tanks precedes fermentation triggered by indigenous yeasts. Finally, the wine is aged for twelve months in used oak barrels, a deliberate choice to preserve the brightness of the fruit without marking the wine with woody aromas.

Grape variety
100% Syrah.
