The elegance and precision of a red wine from Trentino-Alto Adige
The estate
The history of the family estate dates back to 1869, but it was in 1988 that the Elena Walch brand came into being, driven by this visionary architect. Located in Trentino-Alto Adige, in northern Italy, this 55-hectare estate revolutionised local viticulture by prioritising quality and the expression of terroir. Today, the founder's daughters, Julia and Karoline Walch, are at the helm of the estate. They carry on this legacy by combining technical innovation with respect for the environment, establishing the house as one of the region's leading benchmarks.
The vineyard
The vines cover around 55 hectares spread across exceptional terroirs surrounding the villages of Tramin and Caldaro, in Alto Adige. Planted on hillsides with varied exposures, the vineyard enjoys an Alpine climate with Mediterranean influences. The vines are trained using gentle Guyot pruning at high planting density. Strongly committed to sustainability, the estate promotes biodiversity through cover cropping, the sowing of legumes and a complete absence of herbicides, virtuous practices that have been rewarded with VIVA certification.
The vintage
2023 stood out for particularly favourable weather conditions in the region. The vines benefited from hot, sunny summer days, perfectly offset by the cool nights typical of this mountain climate. This marked diurnal temperature range encouraged optimal ripening of the berries, ensuring the grapes retained their acidity and achieved fine structural balance.
Winemaking and ageing
The production of this Italian wine reflects the estate's philosophy of excellence. Following an exclusively manual harvest that allows for rigorous sorting, the grapes are brought into a modern gravity-flow winery. Fermentation takes place traditionally in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged in large wooden vessels, allowing gentle micro-oxygenation that softens the tannins while preserving the freshness and vibrancy of the fruit.
Grape variety
Pinot Noir.
