Robert Parker

Luis Gutiérrez

The 2013 EDA is pure Cariñena sourced from a slope vineyard at 550 meters altitude on slate soils in the village of Poboleda. It fermented in stainless steel tanks with selected yeasts and matured in two 500-liter new French oak barrels for 18 months. The fruit showed very ripe, verging on overripeness, with some aromas of browning apples, something organic and a distinct minty hint. The palate shows abundant, dusty and slightly drying tannins. It felt like the oak regime was a bit too much for the fruit. I hesitated. There are 1,220 bottles produced.

Description

The intensity and power of a great Catalan wine by Franck Massard

The estate

Top sommelier crowned on numerous occasions, including a title of best sommelier in England in 1996, Franck Massard decided in 2004 to embark on a new adventure which took him to Spain. The mystical and superb lands of the Priorat region fascinated him. His project began with the acquisition of a plot of land in the village of El Molar, south of Barcelona, in Catalonia. Thus the Franck Massard vineyard was born. Authenticity and nature take on their full meaning through Spanish wines bursting with freshness and lively juices structured by well-defined tannins for an elegant mouthfeel. Franck Massard uses his talent as a winemaker with a rare virtuosity that allows him to reveal the expression of each grape variety, to better bring to the fore the identity of Priorat, the emblematic Spanish wine-growing area.

The vineyard

Produced in extremely limited quantities, and only in exceptional years, the EDA is a Priorat wine that pays tribute to the Spanish municipality of Poboleda, a favourite place for growing Carignan.

Winemaking and ageing

The grapes are harvested by hand in the morning to preserve the freshness of the fruit. Once de-stemmed, the grapes undergo a temperature-controlled fermentation. The wine is aged in new fine grain barrels for 18 months.
