Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for the Saint-Joseph Domaine 2022 Jean-Louis Chave
Tasting
Colour
Beautifully clear, this cuvée reveals a deep, brilliant garnet hue with violet tints.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet is beguiling in its expression, dominated by notes of red and black fruit such as plum, blackberry and blackcurrant. It is enriched with floral touches of violet, spices such as white pepper, along with mineral nuances of graphite, liquorice and forest floor.
Palate
Savoury and medium-bodied, the palate reveals fine complexity. Vibrant fruit aromas are perfectly balanced by spicy notes. The long, lingering finish unfolds with delicate floral and peppery touches, while retaining great freshness.
Food and wine pairing
This red wine pairs wonderfully with lamb dishes seasoned with herbes de Provence, roast duck with figs or a traditional Provençal daube. It will also pair very well with grilled meats, fine cured meats or hard cheeses.
Service and storage
To fully appreciate this vintage, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 17°C, decanting it one to two hours before tasting. Approachable from now, it has the structure to age in the cellar until at least 2035.
The authentic expression of a Rhône Valley wine
The estate
The estate's history began in 1481 when Charles Chave received vineyard land. Located in Mauves, the estate today spans around 15 hectares. Representing the sixteenth generation, Jean-Louis Chave has been at the helm of the estate since the late 2000s. A staunch advocate of environmentally responsible viticulture, the estate has applied certified organic methods since 2019. Renowned worldwide, it stands out for its commitment to letting the authenticity of its terroirs shine through wines of remarkable precision.
The vineyard
The grapes used for this cuvée come from plots within the Saint-Joseph appellation, notably in the historic sectors of Bachasson and Clos Florentin. Grown on steep, terraced hillsides with granite soils, the vines must reach a minimum age of twenty years to be included in this wine, ensuring optimal concentration.
The vintage
The year 2022 stood out for its distinctive weather conditions in the region, offering a growing cycle that preserved lovely freshness. Unlike some warmer previous years, this vintage favoured balanced ripening without excess, safeguarding the berries' natural acidity.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes are harvested by hand at full ripeness. In the cellar, each plot is vinified separately using indigenous yeasts, in stainless steel tanks, concrete vats or open wooden foudres, with partial destemming. The wine is then aged for 18 to 24 months in carefully selected 228-litre French oak barrels.
Grape variety
Syrah (100%).
