Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for the Corton Grand Cru 2023 by Joseph Drouhin
Tasting
Appearance
The wine has an intense, deep red colour.
Nose
Powerful, the nose releases aromas of ripe red and black berries such as black cherry, blackberry and raspberry. Over time, it evolves towards notes of candied fruit, sweet spices and subtle musky hints.
Palate
Smooth and complex, the palate has lovely breadth that perfectly balances a firm tannic structure without the slightest harshness. The finish stands out for its remarkable aromatic persistence, recalling candied fruit.
Food and wine pairing
This great French red wine pairs wonderfully with roast red meats, full-flavoured game or succulent poultry. It is also an ideal match for dishes served in a wild mushroom sauce.
Serving and cellaring
For optimal enjoyment, serve this Corton Grand Cru 2023 at around 16°C. Built for ageing, this wine will reach its peak between 2038 and 2043 and can be enjoyed until around 2053.
The elegance and complexity of a Burgundy Grand Cru
The estate
Founded in Beaune in 1880, Maison Joseph Drouhin is an iconic name in Burgundy. Now run by the fourth generation, represented by Frédéric Drouhin and his siblings, this family estate spans nearly 100 hectares across the region. A pioneer, the house adopted organic and biodynamic viticulture as early as the late 1980s. Renowned worldwide, Maison Joseph Drouhin stands out for its constant pursuit of elegant perfection, always favouring finesse and the authentic expression of its terroirs.
The vineyard
This Corton comes from the famous hill of the same name, which extends over the villages of Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix-Serrigny and Pernand-Vergelesses. The vines enjoy an ideal south-east exposure and thrive on well-drained soils of clay and small pebbles. These conditions force the roots to reach deep for nutrients, which enhances the complexity of the grapes. The vineyard is managed according to strict principles that respect the environment and biodiversity.
The vintage
2023 ranks as one of the hottest years ever recorded in the region, surpassing even the temperatures of 2022. Despite this intense heat, the growing cycle produced a generous harvest of exceptionally ripe, perfectly healthy grapes.
Vinification and ageing
The Corton Grand Cru 2023 is harvested exclusively by hand. Between 20% and 50% whole bunches are used during vinification, with indigenous yeasts only. Fermentation and maceration take place in small open vats over two to three weeks, followed by gentle vertical pressing. Finally, the wine is aged for 16 to 20 months in French oak barrels, around 30% of which are new.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir.
