The 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Clos de l'Oratoire des Papes les Chorégies Blanc is equal parts Bourboulenc and Clairette, fermented and matured in a mix of older barrels and terracotta vessels. Scents of crushed stone accent lemon and lime scents on the nose, while the palate is on the leaner, crisper side for white Chateauneuf du Pape (it has only 12.5% alcohol), a style that might be termed "wannabe Burgundian," with a long, citrusy finish.

Warm macadamia nut and shortbread notes enrich green plum and herbs in this stylish white. A subtle tug of white tea tannins provides scaffolding as density builds toward the toasty finish, with a jolt of salty, lemony freshness. Drink now through 2028. 275 cases made, 25 cases imported.

Decanter

A very fresh and fine expression, with naturalistic acidity and an elegant, cleansing mouthfeel – Châteauneuf whites can be gloopy, but this has cut and vigour, likely due to the limestone soils. The oak is a touch noticeable for now, lending some vanilla and spice, but should settle in a year or so and fully integrate. This has personality; it has the freshness and focus that many estates would envy. Very smart oak work. The second vintage made of this cuvée.

60% Clairette, 40% Bourboulenc. Whole-bunch-pressed. Vinified and aged for nine months in old oak barrels (60%) and terracotta amphorae (40%). Tasted blind. Nutty and mealy nose. Slight flintiness and lovely acidity; there is a nice frame of oak here as well. Weighty yet still carries itself with energy and vibrancy. Very young and the oak should integrate well. (AC)

Bright light golden colour and hue. Intense nose blending some oak-derived spiciness, toast, vanilla, clove, wax, ripe yellow fruit, with fresh citrus, lemongrass, and garrigue. The palate shows great power and concentration without heaviness, well-balanced freshness adding lift, textured and ample with good layers, apricot, papaya and honey flavors with some refreshing herbal notes. Layered and complex with a long and dense finish, still youthful but built for a long life.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for the Clos de l'Oratoire des Papes "Les Chorégies" 2022 by L'Oratoire des Papes

Tasting notes

Color
Revealing an intense yellow color, it is enhanced by delicate green hues.

Nose
Of great finesse, the bouquet reveals aromas of white fruits such as pear and hawthorn blossom. It then evolves towards floral notes, underscored by a discreet mineral touch of gunflint.

Palate
The palate stands out with a chiseled structure, offering a surprising balance between beautiful sweetness, refreshing tension, and pronounced salinity. The long, easy-drinking finish stretches out with a pleasant hint of bitterness.

Food and wine pairing

This white wine pairs wonderfully with noble seafood such as scallops or lobster. It will also enhance monkfish tail with saffron, dishes made with fresh truffle, langoustines, or well-aged hard cheeses.

Service and storage

For an optimal tasting experience, it is recommended to serve this wine at a temperature of around 10°C, after decanting for about thirty minutes or opening it a few hours in advance. It can be enjoyed young, but also has the aging potential to develop in the cellar for 10 years or more.

Other characteristics

In order to preserve all the vivacity and aromatic clarity of this cuvée, no malolactic fermentation was carried out during its production.

The mineral purity of a Châteauneuf-du-Pape white wine

The estate

Founded in 1880, L'Oratoire des Papes is a historic figure of the Rhône Valley. Its iconic label, created in 1926, is recognized worldwide. Located in Courthézon, the estate is now managed by François Miquel, following its acquisition by Maison Ogier in 2000. Under the technical direction of Édouard Guérin, the estate distinguishes itself through its commitment to organic farming and the preservation of soil life, producing wines that express the geological complexity of their terroir with great precision.

The vineyard

The Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyard is characterized by an exceptional geological mosaic. For this white cuvée, the grapes come exclusively from plots resting on limestone outcrops dating back to the Urgonian period. This specific, particularly poor terroir gives the vines a unique ability to draw out the freshness and salinity needed to produce great white wines. The estate favors environmentally responsible viticulture, with natural grass cover and the use of organic fertilizers, fostering a living ecosystem.

Winemaking and aging

The harvest is carried out by hand with rigorous sorting. The whole bunches undergo direct pressing, followed by cold settling. Fermentation starts naturally through indigenous yeasts, without temperature control, in 600-liter ceramic amphorae and 300-liter French oak barrels. The wine is then aged for nine months in these same vessels, before resting for an additional year in bottle prior to release.

Grape varieties

Clairette (50%), Bourboulenc (50%).
