Decanter

Milk chocolate, a sense of creaminess and softly dry minerality to this with some red berry notes and touches of strawberry. It's well made, but not giving huge energy or character.

Vinous

Neal Martin

The 2021 Les Tours de Laroque has a straightforward, earthy bouquet with moderate vigor, displaying a touch of orange liqueur and wild mint. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins, quite a masculine Saint-Émilion that feels a little short on the finish. There's a large gap between this and the Grand Vin.

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

A blend of 96% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, Les Tours de Laroque 2021 has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. It opens with scents of black cherries and stewed plums, followed by hints of tar, Provence herbs, and graphite. Medium-bodied, the palate is light on its feet and uncomplicated, with a soft texture and a refreshing finish.

Le Figaro Vin

Fresh and straightforward on the nose, it shows a slight reductive note on the palate, masking a very concentrated, rich and energetic core of fruit. The finish is indulgent, with mocha notes.

Description

The freshness and structure of a Saint-Émilion second wine

The estate

Set on a limestone plateau, Château Laroque overlooks the prestigious Saint-Émilion appellation. A Grand Cru Classé and a true winegrowing stronghold for more than nine centuries, it remains the largest estate in the appellation.

The vineyard

Drawn from 61 hectares of old vines farmed using massal selection, this Saint-Émilion vineyard rests on asteriated limestone typical of Bordeaux’s Right Bank. Facing both east and west, the vines thrive on soils of fine bluish clays with a high limestone content, ensuring freshness and tension.

The wine

The estate’s second wine, Les Tours de Laroque comes from a rigorous selection of plots aged 30 years and under, planted from massal-selection plant material of the historic grape varieties.

Winemaking and ageing

Hand-harvested grapes. Parcel-by-parcel vinification in small vats with gravity filling. Ageing on fine lees for 14 to 16 months, in once-used barrels and in foudres

Blend

Merlot (95%) and Cabernet Franc (5%).
