Wine Spectator

Energetic and sultry at the same time, with a pronounced earthy dimension—fresh chives, white pepper, crushed flint and saline streaks—overlaying an elegant core of melon and verbena. Flattering toast notes add richness, while white tea tannins and succulent acidity keep pace through the salt-coated finish, filigreed with flinty mineral and smoke details. Drink now through 2028.

The nose shows pear, white flowers, slaty and honeyed notes. Quite dry on the mid-palate with a reductive, smoky character. A nutty finish that is also slightly savoury. Clean, balanced, and with good fruit weight. (AC)

The 2021 Saint Joseph Les Granilites Blanc is a step up, offering bright citrus, candied lemon, and floral notes in a medium-bodied, elegant, mid-weight yet beautifully balanced package. It shows the fresher style of the vintage and is going to keep for 4-5 years as well. I'd happily drink a glass.

La RVF

This is a lovely cuvée, raised mostly in stainless steel tanks, which brings fine freshness and precision, further enhanced by the vintage’s cool character. A finely coated wine, with tension on the finish and attractive, delicate bitters.

The delicacy and precision of a Rhône Valley white wine

The property

Established since 1808 in Tain-L’Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier House today embodies the elite of the greatest names in Rhône Valley wines.

Vinegrower and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. The wines of Maison Chapoutier are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the finest connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

The Les Granilites 2019 from M. Chapoutier is a Saint-Joseph wine from a selection of parcels located in the municipalities of Charnas, Tournon and Mauves. Facing southeast on granite soils, these vines benefit from a natural exposure to the wind ensuring regular freshness throughout the summer.

Vinification and aging

Manual harvest and direct pressing followed by a cold settling for 48h. Fermentations in 600-liter barrels with indigenous yeasts. Aging for 8 months in stainless steel tanks (75%) to preserve freshness and minerality, as well as in demi-muids (25%) giving the wine structure, power and aromatic complexity.

Blend

Marsanne (100%).
