James Suckling

What a staggering fragrance this has, with aromas ranging from red rose to damson plum, smoke and black pepper. So velvety and sophisticated for this appellation that’s often associated with raw power or earthiness, but with the depth and structure you expect from Cornas. So much life at the finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.

Josh Raynolds

Deep, bright-rimmed violet. The nose highlights spice-tinged, dark berry preserves and floral scents, along with olive paste, vanilla and smoked meat hints. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering plush boysenberry, cassis and fruitcake flavors that are underscored by a vein of juicy acidity. Rich and broad but energetic as well, showing sharp definition and lingering olive and spice notes on the long, youthfully tannic finish.

Description

A fresh and complex Cornas red wine signed M. Chapoutier

The estate

Established since 1808 in Tain-L’Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier House today embodies the elite of the greatest names in Rhône Valley wines.

Vinegrower and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. The wines of Maison Chapoutier are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the finest connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

Lieu-dit Saint-Pierre 2019 is a Cornas wine made from vines planted on a granitic and clayey terroir facing southeast, located on the heights of the appellation at 400 meters altitude.

Vinification and aging

After manual harvesting, the grapes are destemmed. Fermentation for 10 days in raw concrete vats, then maceration between 4 to 5 weeks. Aging in barrels (of which 20% are new) for 16 to 18 months.

Blend

Syrah (100%)
