Robert Parker

Joe Czerwinski

Coming from a west-facing, granite slope—basically an extension of Hermitage's Bessards—the 2020 Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Roure features aromas of hickory smoke and maple sugar but also appealing cassis and blueberry fruit and a bit of crushed stone. In the mouth, the wine shows some granitic austerity on its medium to full-bodied palate, framed by silky but firm tannins that make the wine more structured and straight than the Thalabert bottling.

The 2020 Crozes Hermitage Domaine De Roure is more focused and austere, with some background wood in its darker berries, graphite, ground pepper, and bouquet garni-like nuances. It’s medium to full-bodied, has firm tannins, terrific mid-palate depth, and outstanding length. It’s another beautiful wine that will age gracefully.

Description

The typicality of a Crozes-Hermitage wine

The estate

Paul Jaboulet-Aîné, the infamous reference among Northern Rhône Valley wines, was founded in 1834 in Tain L'Hermitage. The renowned oenologist and winemaker, Caroline Frey, has been running this illustrious house, owned by the Frey family, since 2006. Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné watches over 125 hectares of vines that spread over exceptional appellations such as Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise.

The vineyard

Domaine de Roure by Paul Jaboulet-Aîné is a Crozes-Hermitage wine that stems from a 3.5-hectare terroir. The vines rest on granite slopes and enjoy a south/south-west sun exposure. This estate has been owned by Jaboulet-Aîné since 1996.

The vintage

A mild winter, favouring an early budding of the vines, preceded a warm spring with regular rainfall. The flowering period was homogeneous and very good quality. July was hot and dry. The harvest took place under very good conditions and enabled the teams to harvest very healthy grapes.

Vinification and ageing

The hand-picked grapes are rigorously sorted in the vineyard. Vatting for around 4 weeks, along with gentle extractions. Aged in French oak barrels (15% new).

The blend

Paul Jaboulet-Aîné's Domaine de Roure 2020 is a 100% Syrah.
