St Henri 2004 from Penfolds : an Australian red wine with tannins of great finesse and a vibrant acidity

The St Henri of Penfolds is a red wine made from a blend of 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon produced in Australia, from the vineyards of various regions (Barossa ValleyLanghorne CreekAdelaide Hills). The wine is aged for 16 months in old oak vats.

At tasting, the St Henri 2004 of Penfolds presents a dense red colour. The nose reveals an intense, dense and spicy bouquet, with fragrances of nutmeg, lavender, rosemary, musk, and subtle notes of black and red licorice. One can also detect floral aromas, along with frozen cherries and prunes, before aged pipe tobacco, roasted lamb juice and quince appear. On the palate, the wine shows a beautiful maturity, roundness, tannins of a great finesse and a vibrant acidity. The 2004 Penfolds St Henri reveals tasty touches of black cherries, along with flavours of cold roast lamb and black pudding. To be consumed before 2032.

Wine Advocate-Parker :
The 2004 St.-Henri Shiraz was sourced from five regions and aged in seasoned oak. Purple-colored, the nose gives up aromas of smoke, game, Asian spices, blueberry, and blackberry. Smooth-textured on the palate, it is nicely layered with savory fruit, lots of spice, and enough stuffing to evolve for 3-5 years. This lengthy effort will be in its prime from 2012 to 2022.
