Robert Parker

William Kelley

Disgorged with four grams per liter dosage, the 2008 Extra Brut Vintage hasn't appreciably evolved since I last tasted it. Offering up pretty aromas of honeycomb, crisp green apple, white flowers and fresh pastry, it's medium to full-bodied, tensile and incisive, with a tightly wound core, racy acids and an elegant pinpoint mousse. I wouldn't open bottles from my own cellar for another five years, as this is evolving at a glacial pace.

Vinous

Antonio Galloni

The 2008 Brut Vintage is a delicious wine with which to explore the vintage, as it offers a lovely combination of richness, energy and early approachability. There is a sense of vibrancy that is so appealing. Orchard fruit, dried flowers, mint, spice and hazelnut all grace this enticing, impeccably rendered 2008 from Billecart-Salmon. Lovely. The blend is 65% Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de la Marne and 35% Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs done entirely in stainless steel. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Falstaff

Falstaff

Bright golden yellow, silver reflections; very fine, persistent mousse. Fine yellow tropical fruit with a hint of biscuit, fresh peach, nuances of meadow herbs and orange zest, a delicate mineral touch, pineapple and caramel in the background. Tight-knit, compact, ripe white fruit, chalky-mineral texture, taut and very well-balanced. An elegant food wine with very promising ageing potential; very lively, dynamic style.

Wine Enthusiast

Roger Voss

Building on the structured Pinot Noir, often a hallmark of this producer's Champagnes, this wine is densely textured and full of white fruits from the Chardonnay. Still young, it remains on the fruit spectrum so wait until 2021 for the full glory of the maturity to come through.

Description

The intensity of a distinguished, charming wine

The estate

Since its creation in 1818 by the married couple, Elisabeth Salmon and Nicolas-François Billecart, the Billecart-Salmon Champagne House has remained independent, having preserved all of its know-how and demand for high-quality cuvées for 7 generations.

The vineyard

The Billecart-Salmon vineyard covers 100 hectares from Côte des Blancs to the Reims mountain. The vines are cultivated and cared for in a traditional manner so that the wine resembles real fruit and to reflect the quality of its terroir.

Winemaking and ageing

The Vintage 2008 by the Billecart-Salmon Champagne House is made from grapes which come from the beautiful terroirs of Grand and Premier crus. This Vintage 2008 is aged for 9 years in the coolness of the house’s chalk cellars.

Blend

The product of a great vintage in Champagne, the Vintage 2008 by Billecart-Salmon is made from a blend of Pinot Noir (65%) from the Reims Mountain and the Marne Valley, as well as Chardonnay (35%) from great terroirs in Côte des Blancs.

Tasting

Colour

The wine is an elegant golden yellow with golden reflections. The effervescence is wonderfully fine.

Nose

The nose seduces with its aromatic intensity, which highlights the radiance of the fruit. Tangy notes of citrus, delicious notes of pastry and ripe yellow fruits with scents of mirabelle plum, the sweetness of dried, roasted fruits…the bouqet offers a real succession of delicious scents.

Palate

Chiseled and tight, the palate seduces with its texture as well as its aromas of citrus and shortbread.

Keeping

A deep and distinguished champagne to combine with high-quality pairings, which will evolve gracefully when kept from now to 2028 and beyond for the Magnum size.

Serving

For an optimal tasting, serve between 11 and 12°C.
