Decanter

Dom Pérignon is named after 17th-century Benedictine monk Dom Pierre Pérignon (1638-1715), who is said to have invented sparkling wine while cellarmaster at the Abbey of Hautvillers. In truth, his task was to find a way to prevent a second fermentation in the bottle as the bottles were exploding. Dom Pérignon is a vintage Champagne made using an approximate blend of 50/50 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It is one of the highest-rated and most desirable Champagnes on the market. Michelle Cherutti-Kowal MW: Brioche, almonds and red apples on the nose and palate. Great balance with dosage and acidity. Excellent combination of fruit and bottle age. Stefan Neumann MS: Top-notch salty, mineral, iodine-like aromas. Showing a wonderful sourdough-like character with delicate roasted nuts. Depth and drive, elegance and power. Matt Walls: Deep, intense, full-bodied style of Champagne, voluminous, generous, very powerful and thunderous. Very long – this is a great wine. So harmonious. Nominated by Jane Anson.

Antonio Galloni

The 2008 Dom Pérignon remains one of the all-time greats here. No longer a young Champagne, the 2008 has begun moving into its first plateau of maturity. Baked apple tart, citrus confit, marzipan and lightly honeyed overtones are front and center. A touch of reduction—always present in 2008—adds freshness and energy.

Light golden colour with small vivid bubbles. Very pure nose offering some chalky notes, lemongrass, ginger and pale stone fruit with a touch of buttery brioche. Pure and precise palate with lovely bite and freshness, still on the youthful side but layered with good proportions, attractive pure fruit, a soft creaminess and a very long bright yet velvety finish.

Bettane+Desseauve

Worthy of the outstanding 2008 vintage, this wine combines remarkable finesse and aromatic delicacy with an intense, rather vigorous depth. A great Champagne to enjoy today for the impatient; a legendary Champagne tomorrow for everyone else.

Let’s not deny ourselves the pleasure: this 2008 is delicious and continues to evolve while keeping plenty of energy on the palate, with that toasty signature on the finish.

Description

The accomplished balance of an athletic Dom Pérignon

The estate

The champagne Dom Pérignon owes its name to the famous monk and procurator of the Abbey of Hautvillers in 1668, Pierre Pérignon, known as Dom Pérignon. According to legend, Pierre Pérignon discovered what is now known as the Champagne method. Interestingly, he taught this method in 1669 to the Benedictine Thierry Ruinart, thus allowing Ruinart to historically become the first Champagne house in 1729. Since January 1, 2019, Vincent Chaperon has succeeded Richard Geoffroy as Cellar Master of Dom Pérignon.

The wine

Every year, recreating the exceptional, being the actor of a new and creative ambition by pursuing the quest to give birth to an ideal, this is what symbolizes Dom Pérignon Vintage 2008.

Because time shapes the identity of Dom Pérignon, the precious bottles are only revealed after many years spent in the coolness and darkness of the house's chalk cellars. The maturation of the bottles on lees allows the Dom Pérignon champagne to gradually transform and magnify itself by reaching different phases of fullness and revealing the spirit that animates the DNA of Dom Pérignon and the expression of the great terroirs of Champagne.

It is therefore after more than eight years of elaboration that Dom Pérignon Vintage 2008 comes into the light. First fullness of Dom Pérignon's expression windows, Dom Pérignon Vintage 2008 appears in an accomplished balance, dazzling with harmony.

The vintage

In a solar decade, the contrasting weather of the 2008 vintage resonates as a singular nuance. And yet, it was thanks to the arrival of September that the miracle happened. Perfect health status, ideal berry maturity, the harvests started from September 15 were spread out to collect the best of the fruit at the right time.

Blend

This vintage champagne 2008 is the result of a secret blend of chardonnay and pinot noir.

Characteristics and tasting advice for Dom Pérignon Vintage 2008

Tasting

For Richard Geoffroy, the great Cellar Master who joined the house in 1990, "Dom Pérignon releases the 2008 vintage, freeing it from a too literal reading of the Champagne canons".

Nose
Displaying a brilliant fruitiness and great complexity, the aromatic bouquet opens on the delicacy of floral notes, tangy notes of citrus and stone fruits while notes of anise and mint bring a beautiful freshness. The second nose emphasizes the finesse of spicy and woody notes evoking roasting.

Palate
On the palate, Dom Pérignon Vintage 2008 reveals a perfect coherence between its aromatic expression and its personality on the palate. Precise, pure and tonic, the wine unfolds its warm generosity where the fruit dominates, enhanced by a lively acidity. Full of flavors, the length of the finish stretches infinitely on smoky notes.

An exceptional champagne that will reveal itself in the most daring wine-food pairings by sublimating its personality full of contrasts. A singular vintage reminiscent of the mythical year 1996, a perfect balance between strength, elegance and freshness that make the signature of the great Dom Pérignon. Dom Pérignon Vintage 2008, already an icon.

Note that this exceptional champagne is available in magnum format, in which it will keep longer!
