An Eden Valley Riesling of exceptional purity and intensity
The estate
Founded in 1847 by Joseph Gilbert in the Eden Valley region of Southern Australia, Pewsey Vale is among the oldest Australian vineyards dedicated exclusively to Riesling. Owned by S. Smith and Son, the estate is managed by winemaker Louisa Rose and viticulturist Brooke Howell. Established on a single plot between 480 and 500 meters above sea level, Pewsey Vale has distinguished itself through its specialization in Riesling for nearly 180 years. A pioneer in the use of Stelvin screw caps as early as 1977, the estate practices certified sustainable viticulture, favoring minimal intervention to produce Rieslings of remarkable purity and elegance.
The vineyard
The 1961 Block comes from the oldest vines of the Pewsey Vale vineyard, located in the Eden Valley region. The grapes are harvested by hand, testifying to the special attention paid to this historic plot.
The vintage
Windy conditions during flowering led to lower than average yields. December proved to be hot and dry, followed by sudden rains in January. During the ripening period, day and night temperatures remained cooler than average. These conditions allowed for the attainment of fine acidity as well as aromas and flavors of great intensity.
Winemaking and ageing
The grapes for the 1961 Block Riesling 2020 were manually harvested on February 25th. Winemaking is carried out through spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. This Southern Australia wine is then aged for a few months on lees, following a minimal intervention approach that respects the natural expression of the terroir.
Grape
This Australian white wine is 100% Riesling.
