An Eden Valley Riesling of exceptional purity and intensity
The estate
Founded in 1847 by Joseph Gilbert in the Eden Valley region of South Australia, Pewsey Vale is one of Australia’s oldest wine estates dedicated exclusively to Riesling. Owned by S. Smith and Son, the estate is led by winemaker Louisa Rose and viticulturist Brooke Howell. Located on a single parcel at an altitude of 480 to 500 meters, Pewsey Vale has stood out for nearly 180 years for its specialization in Riesling. A pioneer in the use of Stelvin screw caps as early as 1977, the estate practices certified sustainable viticulture and favors minimal intervention to produce Rieslings of remarkable purity and elegance.
The vineyard
The 1961 Block comes from the estate’s oldest vines at Pewsey Vale in the Eden Valley region. The grapes are harvested by hand, reflecting the special care devoted to this historic parcel.
The vintage
A windy flowering period resulted in below-average yields. December proved hot and dry, followed by sudden rainfall in January. During ripening, daytime and nighttime temperatures remained cooler than average. These conditions allowed for fine acidity as well as aromas and flavors of great intensity.
Vinification and aging
The grapes for the 1961 Block Riesling 2020 were hand-harvested on February 25. Vinification takes place through spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. This wine from South Australia is then aged on the lees for several months, following a minimal-intervention approach that respects the natural expression of the terroir.
Grape variety
This Australian white wine is 100% Riesling.
