Monica Larner

The Pio Cesare 2021 Barolo draws fruit from various sites, and like the Barbaresco, you get an excellent portrait of the vintage with balanced acidity, firm tannins and bright primary fruit. There is energy and vitality in this pretty Barolo with dried cherry, iris and subtle dustings of iron ore or rust.

Bruce Sanderson

The cherry and raspberry fruit is enhanced by rose and mineral flavors, plus a hint of eucalyptus. This red is sleek and elegant yet also solidly structured, leaving a dusting of tannins on the finish. Best from 2028 through 2043. 1,640 cases imported.

This is very powerful and structured, with aromas of black truffles, graphite and hints of dried thyme and cedar. Medium- to full-bodied and chewy yet polished. Hints of terra cotta and dark fruit. The finish goes on and on. March 2024 release. Best after 2028.

Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for the 2021 Barolo from Pio Cesare

Tasting

This vintage seduces with its soft tannins, its balance and its structure.

The fruitiness and creaminess of a Barolo wine signed Pio Cesare

The property

Pio Cesare was one of the first to believe in the potential and high quality of Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera but also other great wines from Piedmont. At the end of the 19th century, he was once again a pioneer among winemakers to produce these wines with a philosophy dedicated to the terroir and the quality of the latter. The winery was founded in 1881 and this family has been producing Piedmontese wines for five generations. Pio Cesare owns more than 50 hectares of vineyards in the most qualitative and coveted appellations, whose production is voluntarily limited in order to maintain a certain requirement.

The vineyard

The vineyards of Pio Cesare are spread over several prestigious sites in the Piedmont region of Barolo. These plots benefit from an ideal southwest exposure and a soil rich in limestone marls, offering the perfect conditions for the cultivation of nebbiolo.

The wine
This Barolo wine comes from the family vineyards located in Serralunga d’Alba (Ornato, La Serra, Briccolina), Grinzane Cavour (Gustava, Garretti), La Morra (Roncaglie), Novello (Ravera), and, since the 2015 vintage, Monforte (Mosconi).

Vinification and aging

Vinification in stainless steel tanks, with skin maceration of about 25 to 30 days. The aging is carried out in large French oak barrels for about 30 months, with a small part aged in barrels.
