After the challenging 2017 and the incredible 2018, the 2019 vintage has proven to be one of the most beautiful, and one that put to the test the talent and passion of Bordeaux winemakers. 2019 was a vintage of extreme climatic contrasts with a summer that will be remembered for its scorching temperatures. Early September saw cooler and more humid days, which allowed for a peaceful harvest of perfectly ripe fruit. In Bordeaux, the red wines look as good as in the Rhône Valley, with plenty of acidity and fruit on the profile. Meanwhile, the whites are generous and structured. Although the vineyards of Burgundy produced historically low yields in this vintage, the quality is definitely there, for both red and white wines. Products of another superb vintage ending in -9, the 2019 en primeur wines are considered a "winemaker’s vintage", as the changing climate and terroir required constant attention and tireless work out in the vineyard… More than ever, the 2019 vintage highlights the incredible know-how of these winemakers, their ability to bring out the best of each year despite the challenges imposed by Mother Nature and doing so without masking the identity of the terroir. Despite these challenges, the Bordeaux, Burgundy and Rhône Valley en primeur wines of the 2019 vintage are truly beautiful and deserve a special place in the collections of fine wine lovers around the world.
While Bordeaux En Primeur wines are usually released to the market in early April, this year the campaign has been put on hold due to the international context of COVID-19. Following many discussions about how to safely present the new vintage to the world, Bordeaux has come up with some bright new ideas. A series of small tastings will be held around the world in early June to allow wine professionals to safely taste and judge the wines of 2019 Bordeaux En Primeur. The prices will then be set for release in late June to early July.
