The Expression of a Great Etna Cru by Terre Nere
The Estate
Founded in 2002 by Marco and Iano de Grazia, who remain its owners today, Tenuta delle Terre Nere is located in Sicily. Drawing on long experience in the world of wine, they were pioneers in showcasing the region's single-plot terroirs. The vineyard extends over more than thirty hectares, farmed organically. The estate stands out for its environmental commitment, illustrated by its use of renewable energy, and produces Italian wines renowned worldwide for their finesse.
The Vineyard
The vines that give rise to this Italian red wine thrive on the northern slope of the volcano, within the Etna appellation. Located precisely in the contrada of the same name in the municipality of Randazzo, the plot sits at an altitude of between 700 and 750 metres. The vines, between fifty and one hundred years old, are bush-trained (alberello) and cultivated according to organic farming principles. Their roots delve into ancient soils known as "ellittico", composed almost exclusively of fine volcanic sand and ash, providing exceptional natural drainage.
Winemaking and Ageing
The creation of the San Lorenzo 2024 is based on an approach that respects the fruit. After hand harvesting, alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, through the action of indigenous yeasts. Malolactic fermentation then occurs spontaneously. Ageing continues for sixteen to eighteen months in French oak barriques, barrels and foudres, with a moderate proportion of new wood, before concluding with a month's rest in tank.
