Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes of the Charlie's Garden Shiraz 2022 Two Hands
Tasting Notes
Colour
The colour reveals a deep purple-red hue, enhanced by brilliant ruby highlights.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet unfolds in several layers, revealing notes of blackcurrant, cola, and sweet spices such as nutmeg, combined with hints of mocha and a lovely floral freshness. Subtle mineral, earthy, and warm oil nuances complete this complex nose.
Palate
The palate offers a structure that is both powerful and refined, carried by vibrant acidity and velvety tannins. Rich black fruit flavours, such as blackberry and plum, express themselves fully before stretching into a long, finely chiseled finish, marked by remarkable minerality and delicate spicy notes.
Food and Wine Pairing
This Australian red wine pairs wonderfully with beef Wellington, game meats such as venison (roasted or stewed), or herb-crusted lamb. It also pairs very well with Asian-inspired dishes featuring dark meats and spices, as well as aged cheeses like Comté.
Service and Storage
To fully appreciate the Charlie's Garden Shiraz 2022, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 18 and 20°C. Decanting before tasting is advised to allow the aromas to open up and soften the tannins.
Other Characteristics
To preserve the full depth and character derived from its terroir, this wine is bottled without fining or filtration.
The elegance and minerality of an Eden Valley wine
The Estate
Founded in 1999 by Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz, the Two Hands estate is located in the Barossa Valley, in Southern Australia. Born from a desire to highlight the diversity of Australian terroirs, the estate stands out for its merchant model, meticulously selecting the finest grapes from the region. Today led by Michael Twelftree and his co-owner Pierre-Henri Morel, the estate is renowned worldwide for its minimal-intervention approach and its rigorous barrel classification system, ensuring wines of consistent quality and great authenticity.
The Vineyard
The grapes for this cuvée come exclusively from a high-altitude vineyard located on Menglers Hill, in the Eden Valley sub-region. Rising to approximately 800 metres above sea level, this terroir benefits from a cool climate and significant temperature swings between day and night, promoting slow berry ripening. The soils, composed of skeletal gravel, quartz, and gravelly loam over clay layers, offer excellent drainage and give the wine its distinctive mineral signature.
The Vintage
The year 2022 began with a particularly wet winter, allowing soil water reserves to be replenished. Spring brought above-average rainfall, with a windy and wet November that naturally reduced yields during fruit set. Summer proved dry and mild, without extreme heat, with a gentle February and moderate temperatures. Welcome rain at the end of February helped refresh the vines just before harvest, which took place under optimal conditions.
Winemaking and Aging
The grapes destined for the Charlie's Garden Shiraz 2022 are hand-harvested and then fermented in open vats to encourage gentle extraction. Pump-overs are carried out twice a day during the ten-day maceration period. The free-run juice is then blended with the press fractions. Aging takes place over 18 months in French oak barrels, of which 15% are new and 85% are between one and six years old. Malolactic fermentation is also carried out in barrel to refine the wine's texture.
