Robert Parker

Monica Larner

The Caiarossa 2019 Caiarossa is a complex blend featuring Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Syrah and Alicante from vineyard sites across this beautiful property in the high hills off the Tuscan coast. This organic and biodynamic wine is full and generous on the palate, yet it never feels heavy or over-extracted. The wine is balanced and fresh, with thick layers of dark fruit, crushed stone, tobacco and exotic spice.

Wine Spectator

Bruce Sanderson

This red is smooth, yet with no shortage of structure, setting up the flavors of plum, blackberry, black pepper and toasty oak. Well-balanced, with a persistent aftertaste of fruit and spices. Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese and Grenache. Better than previously reviewed. Best from 2025 through 2036. 4,741 cases made, 3,000 cases imported.

Decanter

Flagship Caiarossa is a blend of no less than seven varieties grown on the estate: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot and Alicante. Each variety is vinified separately in concrete and large barrels, then aged in tonneaux and barrels for 11 to 20 months before blending, and a further six months in concrete before bottling. The result in 2019 is a concentrated, intense red that's fresh and salty, rich yet vertical and light on its feet. Sapid red, black and blue fruits sit on a stony mid-palate and hang on through the vibrant finish. Lovely.

James Suckling

This is an intense, full-bodied yet very well-balanced and polished red with velvety, firm and caressing tannins. Ripe black plums, blueberries, chocolate, mocha, sweet spice and dried lavender. Some oyster shells, too. Layered and full of character. Creamy at the end from the polished tannins. 26% syrah, 24% cabernet franc, 23% merlot, 14% cabernet sauvignon, 7% petit verdot, 4% sangiovese and 2% grenache. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink from 2026.

Description

The aromatic expression and refinement of a fine Tuscan red wine

The estate

The Caiarossa estate is located near the small medieval village of Riparbella, on the west coast facing the sea, in Tuscany. The Caiarossa estate stands out due to its high-quality Italian wines, made with the utmost respect for the environment and following the principles of biodynamic viticulture. Since 2004, the Caiarossa estate has been owned by Eric Albada Jelgersma, who also owns Châteaux du Tertre and Giscours in Bordeaux.

The vineyard

The estate reigns over 16 hectares of vineyards that slope gently down to the sea.

The wine

Caiarossa is the emblematic wine of the estate. It is a Tuscan wine made from a mosaic of vineyards and thus, magnifies the nuances and identity of the fine Italian terroirs.

The vintage

A particularly homogeneous and qualitative year, 2019 was marked by a summer whose rainfall and significant temperature variations favoured the development of the vineyard. The harvest was carried out under very good conditions, giving rise to a fine vintage with an alluring freshness and balance.

Vinification and ageing

The wine is vinified in a plot-by-plot manner in order to preserve the expression of each terroir and each grape variety. The vinification is carried out in concrete and wooden vats with slow fermentation and gentle extraction. Following malolactic fermentation and blending, the wines are aged in French oak barrels (30% new) for 14 months. A further two months' ageing in concrete vats is carried out before bottling, after which the wine is aged for a further year in bottle before being released.

The blend

Caiarossa 2019 comprises a blend of Syrah (26%), Cabernet Franc (24%), Merlot (23%), Cabernet Sauvignon (14%), Petit Verdot (7%), Sangiovese (4%) and Grenache (2%).
