Wine Spectator

Alison Napjus

Mandarin orange, ripe cherry, raspberry and apricot fruit notes offer an exuberant burst of flavor at the entry point of this otherwise refined and subtle Champagne. The expressive fruit is joined on the lacy mousse by hints of toast, pastry cream and Earl Grey tea leaf, with an underpinning of minerally chalk and smoke. Lithe and graceful on the palate, but with a dancer's sense of restrained power. Drink now through 2037.

Vinous

Antonio Galloni

The 2004 Dom Pérignon P2 is now entering its first plateau of maturity, where the first notes of aromatic development are present. Hints of marzipan, lemon confit dried flowers, mint, spice and baked apple tart lend notable complexity throughout. Soft contours add to its open-knit, creamy personality.

La RVF

A lovely color. The nose opens with brioche and buttery notes of Chardonnay. With aeration, a chalky, undergrowth character comes through. The palate is relaxed and airy, with a creamy, refined texture. A savory, well-balanced whole that is drinking beautifully today. A more elegant wine, the complete opposite of the 2003 vintage in its palate profile.

Description

A fine champagne from a unique vintage

The producer

Dom Pérignon Champagne owes its name to Pierre Pérignon, the famous monk and cellar master of Abbey de Hautvillers in 1668, who was also known as Dom Pérignon. Legend has it that Pierre Pérignon discovered what is now known as the Champagne method. Interestingly enough, he taught this method to the Benedictine monk, Thierry Ruinart, in 1669, which subsequently enabled the Ruinart House to become the first Champagne house in 1729. Since January 1st 2019, Vincent Chaperon has succeeded Richard Geoffroy as Dom Pérignon’s Cellar Master.

The wine

Stemming from fine Champagne terroirs, Dom Pérignon is always a vintage wine and can only be produced from the grape harvest of a single year. The commitment to the vintage is absolute. For each vintage, a limited amount of bottles are set aside, destined to undergo a longer ageing process. During this extra time, the activity inside the bottle continues to grow. The yeast provides its energy to the wine and enlivens it beautifully.

The champagne enhances its lively expression and reaches the pinnacle of its radiant vitality. This elevation is called Plénitude 2: The Second Life of Dom Pérignon. Elevated to new heights, it unfurls across every dimension – wider, deeper, longer, more intense - and possesses an extended longevity.

The vintage

The 2004 winemaking year will mark the history of Dom Pérignon due to its clemency and generosity.

The course of the year 2004 is almost perfect. The seasons succeeded one another with ease, fluidity and without incident. A rather cool month of August was followed by a few weeks of dry heat that truly shaped the vintage. Benefiting from an abundance of energy, lent by the year 2003, the vines blossomed and expressed themselves fully, leading to a generous harvest of perfectly healthy and superbly ripe grapes that began on September 24th.

Plénitude P2 2004 by Dom Pérignon: Characteristics and tasting tips

The tasting

Nose

The fruit of 2004 remains discreet but it is more clearly defined in this second life of the wine. Pink grapefruit and blood orange notes finally give way to aromas of fig. The extra time on the lees reveals the sublime maturity and minerality of the vintage, the signature style of Dom Pérignon. Cocoa, mocha, roasted notes, brioche and honey notes emerge.

Palate

The wine blends a pleasant tension and aerial expression. It boasts a tactile and structured precision. The ensemble exudes a lingering and elegant finish, underlined by sappy, liquorice notes.
