Description
The pure expression of a Brut champagne without any sulphur added
The producer
Since its creation in 1808, the Drappier Champagne House has a history closely linked to Pinot Noir, its favourite grape variety. It was in the 1930s that, against the town’s general opinion, this grape variety was replanted on the estate. History proved the House right, whose 100% Pinot Noir cuvée Drappier, for the record, was General de Gaulle’s preferred beverage during his family meals.
Today, André and Micheline Drappier’s children represent the eighth generation to cultivate this exceptional organic and biodynamic vineyard, highlighting forgotten grape varieties such as Arbane, Petit Meslier and Blanc Vrai.
The vineyard
The Drappier Champagne House vineyard, at the south of Reims, expands over 100 hectares between the Côte des Bar and its old vines, the Montagne de Reims and its intense Pinot Noir and the Côte des Blancs and its fine Chardonnay. This vineyard derives its particularity from its terroir rich in limestone combined with maximum sunshine. Some of Maison Drappier's plots are also worked with a draft horse.
The wine
Following the wishes of the house, Brut Nature Sans Soufre offers the experience of a great champagne with zero dosage, unfiltered and without the addition of sulphur. This cuvée pays tribute to Pinot Noir from the superb Urville terroirs. These plots enjoy excellent exposure and are based on limestone soils conferring superb elegance and very good minerality.
The vinification and ageing
The Brut Nature Sans Soufre cuvée from the Drappier Champagne House is made only from the juices of the first presses, with mechanical presses at low pressure. In order to preserve the quality of the fruit and limit pumping, the grapes and juices are handled by gravity. Once the alcoholic fermentation has taken place, a complete malolactic fermentation takes place without adding any sulphur or subsequent filtration. In order to preserve the freshness of the fruit, the wines are only aged in vats before proceeding to bottling once the blends have been completed. This champagne is then aged for 2 to 3 years on laths without adding any dosage liqueur.
The blend
Brut Nature Sans Soufre from the Drappier Champagne House is a 100% Pinot Noir.
