Description
Characteristics and tasting advice for the Barolo Mosconi "Vigna Ped" 2020 by Conterno Fantino
Tasting
Color
The color reveals a ruby hue with orange highlights, typical of a nebbiolo in full evolution.
Nose
The nose shows great aromatic complexity with notes of brandy-soaked cherry, Luxardo cherry liqueur and wild red berries. Floral aromas of rose and peony mingle with mineral touches of iodine and iron, alongside spicy nuances, licorice and tea leaves.
Palate
On the palate, this wine is broad and deep, with a relatively tightly knit texture. Chalky tannins provide structure, while the fruit intensity perfectly balances the whole. Flavors of cherry, raspberry, bitter orange and cranberry unfold, accompanied by notes of leather, tobacco, incense and dried herbs. The finish lingers at length with well-defined aromas of red fruit, rose and wild herbs, underpinned by a mineral backbone and lively acidity.
Food and wine pairings
This Barolo Mosconi "Vigna Ped" 2020 is an ideal match for brasato al Barolo, grilled or roasted red meats, game such as wild boar or duck, as well as truffle-based dishes. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses such as Parmigiano-Reggiano or Gorgonzola.
Serving and cellaring
The Barolo Mosconi "Vigna Ped" 2020 can be enjoyed now after aeration in a decanter, but will reach its peak from 2027 through around 2045.
A powerful, mineral Piedmont Barolo by Conterno Fantino
The estate
Founded in 1982 by Claudio Conterno and Guido Fantino, the Conterno Fantino estate now spans around 27 hectares of vineyards located exclusively in Monforte d'Alba, in Piedmont. A pioneer of the Barolo Boys movement, the estate has practiced organic viticulture since 1996 and earned certification in 2012. Today, the property is run by the founders alongside the second generation, including Fabio Fantino, who brings even greater precision to the winemaking. Conterno Fantino stands out for its modern, terroir-respectful approach, using proprietary indigenous yeasts.
The vineyard
The Barolo Mosconi "Vigna Ped" comes from a one-hectare parcel located in the Mosconi cru, at around 400 meters of altitude with a south and southeast exposure. The vines, planted in 1960 and supplemented in 1999 with a selection of the best clones, are rooted in soils made up of sand, silt and clay. This site benefits from steady breezes from the Tanaro Valley, promoting aromatic precision. The vineyard is farmed under certified organic practices, with yields deliberately limited to around 5 tonnes per hectare to concentrate quality.
The vintage
The 2020 vintage in Piedmont was marked by a steady, dry spring, followed by a balanced summer with beneficial rainfall in May. The early harvest, carried out in mid-October, made it possible to pick perfectly ripe, healthy nebbiolo grapes. This vintage produced wines with intense color, supple tannins, structure and early approachability, while retaining excellent cellaring potential.
Vinification and aging
The grapes for the Barolo Mosconi "Vigna Ped" 2020 are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and then fully destemmed. Fermentation and maceration take place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats for 12 to 15 days, using indigenous yeasts cultivated by the estate since 2011. The wine is then aged for two years in French oak barrels, combining 225-liter barriques and 25-hectoliter foudres.
