Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Domaine Belargus's 2022 Quarts
Tasting Notes
Appearance
The colour reveals a deep gold hue, sometimes reaching a light amber, enhanced by brilliant highlights that reflect the wine's richness.
Nose
Wonderfully complex, the nose exudes intense aromas of candied fruit, apricot and citrus. These are joined by indulgent notes of honey and sweet spices, occasionally lifted by subtle hints of saffron and tropical fruit.
Palate
Full-bodied and velvety, the palate seduces with its rich, creamy texture. The sweetness, marked by flavours of fruit paste and marmalade, is perfectly balanced by a crisp acidity and a minerality drawn from the schist soils. The whole displays remarkable vertical tension and unfolds into an exceptionally long finish, without any heaviness.
Food Pairing
This great white wine pairs wonderfully with foie gras, blue-veined cheeses, or lightly sweetened fruit-based desserts featuring apricot or apple. It also goes very well with spicy dishes or those with sweet-and-savoury flavours.
Serving and Cellaring
With its exceptional acidic and mineral backbone, this 2022 Quarts has considerable ageing potential, allowing it to develop beautifully over many years in the cellar.
The Richness and Tension of a Great White Wine from Anjou
The Estate
Legally founded in 2018 by Ivan Massonnat, a passionate investor, Domaine Belargus has quickly established itself as an unmissable reference in the Loire. Built on the foundations of the former Pithon-Paillé estate, the property spans 24 hectares dedicated to a single grape variety. Located at the heart of the Anjou Noir, the domaine stands out for its meticulous parcel-by-parcel approach and its deep commitment to biodiversity, symbolised by the Adonis blue butterfly (Belargus). Farmed organically, the vineyard is at the forefront of a genuine renaissance in Anjou winemaking.
The Vineyard
This cuvée comes from the historic "Les Quarts" site. Located in the Anjou Noir, this terroir is characterised by a south-facing schist hillside. The vines, around thirty years old, benefit from the morning mists rising off the Layon river and from constant winds. The vineyard is certified organic and is currently being converted to biodynamic farming.
The Vintage
Produced only in years deemed exceptional by the estate, this cuvée reflects a particularly favourable 2022 vintage. The weather conditions allowed the grapes to reach optimal ripeness.
Winemaking and Ageing
Crafting the 2022 Quarts calls for highly precise viticulture. The grapes are harvested by hand through successive sorting passes to select only perfectly concentrated berries. The winemaking process is minimally interventionist, aiming to preserve the grape variety's subtle balance.
