Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Domaine Léon Barral Blanc 2023

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a deep orange-yellow hue that is particularly hazy. This visual profile, marked by a slight natural sediment, is typical of maceration wines that have undergone neither fining nor filtration.

Nose
Wonderfully complex, the bouquet opens with subtle oxidative notes that fade with aeration to reveal generous aromas of peach, mandarin and candied lemon. These intertwine with scents of ripe pear, quince, honey and white flowers such as hawthorn and acacia, enhanced by nuances of wild fennel, almond, apricot kernel and a delicate smoky touch.

Palate
The attack is lively and elegant, introducing a full-bodied wine with a beautiful texture. Fine tannins, derived from skin contact, structure the palate, where flavours of stone fruit, citrus, ginger and sweet spices unfold. The minerality of the schist terroirs brings a vibrant freshness, leading to a long, saline and mouth-watering finish, underscored by noble bitter notes.

Food and wine pairing

This wine pairs wonderfully with sauerkraut, cauliflower velouté, zucchini and goat cheese tart or white pudding with Port. More broadly, it is an ideal accompaniment to grilled fish, seafood and subtly spiced Mediterranean dishes.

Service and storage

To fully appreciate the Domaine Léon Barral Blanc 2023, it is recommended to decant it several hours before serving in order to soften its youthful oxidative notes, and to serve it at a temperature of 12°C. This wine can be enjoyed now and will continue to evolve favourably in the cellar, with a drinking window extending to around 2033.

Other characteristics

This white wine stands out for its maceration profile, often referred to as orange wine. It was also awarded a score of 92/100 in the Guide des meilleurs vins de France 2026.

The distinctive expression of a schist terroir in the Languedoc by Domaine Léon Barral

The estate

Established in 1993, Domaine Léon Barral is located in the heart of the Languedoc. Didier Barral, the current owner and manager, represents the thirteenth generation of winemakers in his family and founded this particular estate as a tribute to his grandfather. Supported by his wife Martine, he oversees a 36-hectare vineyard, of which 4 hectares are dedicated to white grape varieties. A pioneer of regenerative viticulture, the estate is distinguished by a unique holistic approach, integrating polyculture and the presence of animals to preserve the natural balance of the ecosystem.

The vineyard

Classified as IGP Pays de l'Hérault, the vineyard is rooted on the steep slopes of the hamlet of Lenthéric, sheltered by the foothills of the Cévennes. The vines, trained in gobelet and aged between 40 and 90 years, thrive on red and blue schist soils that allow for deep rooting. The Mediterranean climate here is tempered by cool nights. The estate fosters remarkable biodiversity through spontaneous cover cropping, the planting of thousands of trees and the winter grazing of cows and black pigs, which naturally maintain and nourish the soil.

Winemaking and aging

The production of the Domaine Léon Barral Blanc 2023 follows a natural, minimal-intervention philosophy. The grapes, gravity-fed into the vats, ferment spontaneously through indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks. The distinctive feature of this wine lies in its three- to four-day skin maceration, a technique that gives it its unique structure. The wine is then bottled without any fining or filtration.
