Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for the Rotenberg 2023 Domaine Marcel Deiss
Tasting notes
Colour
Although this is a white wine, skin-contact maceration gives it a distinctive orange hue with bronze highlights.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with delicate notes of stone fruit reminiscent of peach, intertwined with tangy plum and dried orange peel. Subtle touches of white pepper and a fine chalky minerality elevate the whole.
Palate
Remarkably pure and completely dry, the palate offers a complex texture supported by perfectly integrated acidity. A vibrant citrus freshness, evoking lemon and lime, stretches the wine towards a lingering finish, softened by a trace of residual sweetness.
Food and wine pairing
This wine pairs beautifully with seafood such as lobster, scallops or salmon. It also matches perfectly with delicate white meats, poultry with aromatic herbs, as well as regional culinary specialities such as sauerkraut.
Service and storage
To fully appreciate the complexity of the Rotenberg 2023, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 8 and 11°C. With exceptional aging potential, this wine can be enjoyed until around 2042.
Other characteristics
This wine has an alcohol content of 13%. Bottled without filtration or fining, it retains small particles in suspension and is sealed with a Vinolok glass stopper, allowing natural micro-oxygenation.
The distinctive expression of an Alsace terroir by Domaine Marcel Deiss
The estate
Officially founded in 1947 upon the return from the Second World War, Domaine Marcel Deiss is an emblematic figure of the Alsace vineyards in France. Now led by Mathieu Deiss, the estate spans between 26 and 32 hectares. A pioneer at heart, the domaine stands out for its philosophy of co-planting and its deep commitment to biodynamics, certified since 1998. Domaine Marcel Deiss thus strives to produce wines in which the authentic expression of terroir takes precedence over the grape variety, with deliberately low yields to ensure optimal quality.
The vineyard
Located in the commune of Bergheim in Alsace, the Rotenberg terroir enjoys a privileged east and south-east facing exposure, promoting early ripening of the berries. The vines flourish on reddish soils particularly rich in iron, resting on a base of white oolitic limestone dating back to the Jurassic period. This unique geology gives the grapes remarkable concentration and minerality.
Winemaking and aging
The making of the Rotenberg 2023 relies on a minimalist approach. Fermentation is spontaneously triggered by indigenous yeasts. The wine then undergoes an extended ten-month skin-contact maceration in ceramic and stoneware amphorae, allowing for gentle extraction. Aging continues for a further two months in these same vessels, allowing the different components to integrate perfectly before bottling.
Grape varieties
True to the domaine's ancestral tradition, this cuvée comes from a co-planting combining mainly Riesling and Pinot Gris, with the presence of Muscat, harvested and vinified together.
