Description
The elegance and freshness of a Marsannay red wine
The estate
Located in Marsannay-la-Côte in Burgundy, Domaine Sylvain Pataille was founded in 1999 with a single hectare of leased vines. Today, at the head of a vineyard spanning 15 to 18 hectares, Sylvain Pataille, joined by his brother Laurent, is a key figure of the appellation. A passionate advocate for local terroirs and sustainable viticulture, the current owner obtained organic certification in 2008 and applies biodynamic methods. The estate stands out for its minimal-intervention approach, producing authentic wines that showcase the true identity of their terroir.
The vineyard
This Marsannay red wine is crafted from a blend of several plots located in the northern part of the Côte de Nuits. The terroir is characterized by remarkable geological diversity, combining Jurassic limestone soils, marl, and iron-rich clay. The Pinot Noir vines, averaging 48 to 50 years old, are cultivated according to organic and biodynamic principles, with soil work partly carried out using horses to preserve soil vitality and encourage deep rooting.
The vintage
The year 2022 began with a rainy winter followed by a cool spring that protected the buds from frost. May proved particularly mild, offering excellent flowering conditions. Summer turned out to be contrasted, with a stormy June and a very hot July, causing water stress that slowed ripening while preserving the berries' natural acidity. Providential rains in mid-August revived the growing cycle, allowing for ideal harvesting conditions under dry and windy weather between late August and mid-September.
Winemaking and aging
For this 2022 Marsannay, the grapes are hand-harvested, sorted, and destemmed, with the possible inclusion of whole bunches as needed. Fermentation begins naturally through indigenous yeasts, followed by an extended maceration favoring gentle extraction. Cellar intervention is kept to a minimum. Aging takes place in French oak barrels for 15 to 18 months, with a maximum of 30% new oak to preserve the brightness of the fruit and the expression of the terroir.

Characteristics and tasting notes for the 2022 Marsannay by Domaine Sylvain Pataille
Tasting notes
Color
A beautiful ruby hue of medium intensity, this wine reveals subtle garnet reflections that highlight its youth.
Nose
The bouquet opens with vivid aromas of fresh red fruits such as cherry, raspberry, and strawberry. With aeration, it reveals a beautiful limestone minerality, complemented by nuances of undergrowth, earth, and a delicate spicy, peppery touch.
Palate
Balanced and refined, the attack on fresh fruit is carried by a lively acidity. The mid-palate unfolds flavors of red and black fruits, underscored by a mineral salinity and subtle herbaceous notes. The tannins are fine and silky, leading to an elegant, lingering finish.
Food and wine pairing
This red wine pairs wonderfully with roast duck with cherries, a traditional coq au vin, or feathered game such as pheasant and quail. It also pairs beautifully with herb-braised lamb, mushroom-based dishes, grilled poultry, meaty fish in wine sauce, or aged cheeses with character, such as Époisses.
Service and storage
Approachable in its youth after 15 to 30 minutes of aeration, this 2022 Marsannay will reach its peak between 2027 and 2029. Stored under proper conditions (lying flat, in a cool, dark place), it can be enjoyed until approximately 2030.
