Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of Guado al Tasso 2023
Tasting
Appearance
This wine reveals a particularly deep ruby-red hue.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet is remarkable, dominated by scents of black fruits such as blackberry, blackcurrant and plum. This fruity ensemble is enriched with nuances of liquorice root, tobacco, blood orange and a refreshing touch of mint.
Palate
From the first sip, the texture proves full-bodied and deep. The tannic structure, both dense and enveloping, coats the palate while retaining great elegance through to a long, flavoursome finish.
Food and wine pairings
This great red wine pairs wonderfully with grilled or roasted red meats, such as a fine cut of beef or a leg of lamb with herbs. It also brilliantly accompanies slow-cooked dishes in sauce, such as wild boar stew, as well as long-aged hard cheeses.
Serving and cellaring
To fully appreciate this vintage, it is recommended to decant it one to two hours before tasting and to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18 °C. Although already highly seductive in its youth, it boasts excellent cellaring potential, allowing it to span decades.
The elegance of a great Tuscan wine crafted by Antinori
The estate
Located on the coast of Upper Maremma, Tenuta Guado al Tasso belongs to the renowned Antinori family. While the winemaking history of this dynasty dates back to the 14th century, the estate's iconic brand and wine came into being upon their creation in 1990. Today, the Antinori - Guado al Tasso estate is run by Albiera, Allegra and Alessia Antinori, alongside oenologist Renzo Cotarella. This Tuscan estate perfectly embodies the House's maritime identity, producing Bordeaux-inspired cuvées renowned worldwide for their excellence.
The vineyard
The vines used to produce this great Bolgheri Superiore thrive at the heart of a unique landscape nicknamed the "Bolgheri amphitheatre". This plain terroir benefits from the gentle breezes of the Tyrrhenian Sea and generous sunshine. The soils, of alluvial origin, display great diversity, ranging from clayey sands to clayey silts. They stand out for the presence of "scheletro", fine rocky deposits that ensure excellent drainage and promote concentration in the berries.
The vintage
The 2023 year began with a mild winter with little rainfall, leading to an early budburst in the vines from 20 March. Spring brought moderate precipitation, requiring particular attention in the plots. July then proved hot and dry, offering ideal conditions for veraison. Finally, a sunny and rain-free September allowed the grapes to reach optimal ripeness before the harvest.
Winemaking and aging
The harvested grapes underwent rigorous double sorting, before and after destemming. Each plot was harvested and fermented separately. Fermentation and maceration took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for 18 to 25 days. The wine was then transferred to barrels, where malolactic fermentation was completed at the end of the year. In February, the finest lots were selected for the final blend. Aging continued in new French oak barrels until bottling in July 2025.
Grape varieties
This blend is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, complemented by a small proportion of Petit Verdot.
