Wine Spectator

Kristen Bieler

Attractively smoky and earthy, offering bay leaf, singed herbs and smoldering tobacco layered atop black cherry paste and cassis reduction. Mouthcoating and salty on the palate, with a sanguine thread running from start to full-bodied finish. Texturally stunning, with chewiness and sweet, warm soil adding intrigue to the substantial finish, which goes on and on. Tannins are already assuming a gentle edge, which makes this approachable now, but patience will be rewarded. Drink now through 2042. 580 cases made, 25 cases imported.

Nicolas Greinacher

The 2022 Côte-Rôtie Les Grandes Places shares similar rustic characteristics with the La Landonne from the same vintage, pointing to the presence of Brettanomyces. Time in the glass also brings out red plum, black cherry and fleshy essences. Touching the medium- to full-bodied palate with significant flavor concentration, the 2022 winds down with a savory close.

Tasting

This wine reveals a strong structure, magnified by delicate spicy notes. Powerful, it stands out for its aging potential.

A Rhône wine of remarkable finesse

The property

Among the emblematic figures of the Northern Rhône Valley, the Domaine Jean-Michel Gerin stands out as one of the most fervent ambassadors of the Côte-Rôtie. Heir to a lineage of winemakers established for six generations, Jean-Michel Gerin founded his own estate in 1983, before reviving the family estate under his name. Thanks to his exemplary dedication and universally recognized talent, he has managed to elevate his estate to a global reference.

The vineyard

Located in the heart of the prestigious Côte-Rôtie vineyard, in the charming village of Ampuis, this exceptional terroir is 30 km south of Lyon, marking the northern limit of the Rhône Valley. Benefiting from a dual climatic influence, Mediterranean and continental, it produces wines with remarkable balance, combining power, structured tannins, silkiness and elegance.

Vinification and aging

This wine has undergone an aging process of 22 months, divided between 40% new barrels and 60% barrels that have been used for 1 or 2 wines.
