Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of Joseph Drouhin's Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Folatières" 2023
Tasting
Appearance
A luminous golden hue, enhanced by subtle green highlights that bear witness to its great purity.
Nose
The bouquet reveals a beautiful aromatic complexity, weaving together scents of hawthorn, honeysuckle and ripe white fruits. The whole is enriched by indulgent notes of acacia honey, fresh almond and marzipan, all underscored by a flinty minerality and delicate buttery touches.
Palate
The palate stands out for its dense, straight texture, driven by remarkable power and a fine natural acidity. The deeply mineral finish is particularly long and mouth-watering.
Food and wine pairings
This cuvée is the ideal companion to poultry in sauce, pan-seared veal with wild mushrooms, or refined dishes such as foie gras, lobster and spiny lobster. It also enhances grilled sea fish as well as cheeses such as fresh goat cheese, creamy Reblochon or Brie de Meaux.
Serving and cellaring
For optimal tasting, this Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Folatières" 2023 should be served at a temperature between 11 and 13°C. Boasting excellent ageing potential, it will be fully appreciated after a few years in the cellar and can be enjoyed until around 2038.
The authentic expression of a Puligny-Montrachet terroir by Maison Joseph Drouhin
The estate
Founded in 1880 in Beaune, Joseph Drouhin is a historic and iconic figure of Burgundy. This estate, which today spans nearly 100 hectares from the north to the south of the region, is run by the fourth generation of the family, represented by Frédéric, Véronique, Philippe and Laurent Drouhin. A pioneer in adopting environmentally friendly practices, the property stands out for its early commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture, constantly striving to express the purity of its terroirs through wines of great precision.
The vineyard
This Puligny-Montrachet comes from the renowned Climat of Folatières. The vines flourish here at an altitude of 260 metres, benefiting from an excellent south-easterly exposure. With a planting density of 10,000 vines per hectare, this terroir offers ideal conditions to reveal all the typicity and richness of the appellation.
The vintage
The 2023 growing season was marked by particularly warm temperatures and very generous sunshine. While the beginning of the year saw a rainfall deficit, precipitation then proved uneven across the different sectors, allowing for good vegetative development. Flowering took place quickly thanks to an alternation of heat and regular rainfall, guiding the berries to perfect ripeness by the time of the harvest.
Winemaking and ageing
After careful sorting, the whole bunches of this Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Folatières" 2023 undergo a slow pneumatic pressing. The last press juices are separated to retain only the most qualitative. Part of the vinification is carried out innovatively in an egg-shaped concrete vat to encourage gentle circulation of the wine. Ageing then takes place over a period of 14 to 16 months, exclusively in French oak barrels, of which around 20% are new, with rigorous monitoring to preserve the elegance of the fruit.
Grape variety
100% Chardonnay.
