Tasting Notes and Advice for La Chatellenie 2025 by Joseph Mellot
Tasting
Appearance
True to this cuvée, the colour reveals a bright pale yellow hue, enhanced by delicate green and silvery reflections.
Nose
Wonderfully pure, the aromatic bouquet opens with vibrant notes of citrus, such as lemon and grapefruit, intimately intertwined with white fruit aromas. The whole is underlined by subtle floral touches and a characteristic minerality reminiscent of gunflint.
Palate
Energetic and remarkably precise, the palate captivates with its tension and refined texture. Carried by a vibrant acidity, this white wine reveals a deeply mineral backbone that extends into a long finish, marked by refreshing citrus notes and a hint of salinity.
Food and Wine Pairings
This white wine pairs wonderfully with shellfish, delicate fish, or white meats served with a creamy mushroom sauce.
The pure, mineral expression of a Sancerre white wine
The Estate
Founded in 1513 in Sancerre, Maison Joseph Mellot is a historic and essential figure in the Loire Valley. As the only estate to own vines across all eight Centre-Loire appellations, it stands out for its exceptional territorial roots. Now led by Catherine Corbeau-Mellot and her sons, the estate carries on a family expertise spanning five centuries. A pioneer in eco-responsibility, the house is distinguished by its rigorous environmental certifications, combining tradition and sustainable viticulture to reveal the authenticity of its terroirs.
The Vineyard
The cuvée comes from an 18-hectare vineyard located within the Sancerre appellation. Around 25 years old, the vines thrive on a distinctive terroir of flint-clay soils, renowned for giving the grapes tension and minerality. The estate favours sustainable farming, certified High Environmental Value, with mechanical soil work that respects biodiversity.
Winemaking and Ageing
To craft La Chatellenie 2025, the mechanically harvested grapes undergo direct pressing in a pneumatic press. After a rigorous selection of the juices and cold settling, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. To preserve all the freshness and aromatic purity of the fruit, this white Sancerre wine is then aged on fine lees in stainless steel tanks, with no oak influence.
