The estate

Founded in 1973 by Joseph Phelps, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has become one of the leading Californian references for fine Napa Valley and Sonoma Coast wines. A successful construction entrepreneur, Joseph Phelps has steadily elevated the reputation of this family estate which is one of the most famous wineries in the world due to its iconic wines.

The wine

The second wine of the estate, Joseph Phelps' Cabernet Sauvignon is a Napa Valley wine expressing all the typicity and nuances of California's greatest terroirs.

The vintage

The coolness and heavy rainfall recorded in winter and spring delayed budburst and flowering in some parts of the vineyard. Although July was colder than in other years, the mild weather in August and September favoured the ripening of the grapes. Including a new vineyard (El Venadito) in the blend, this 2019 vintage seduces with its maturity and structure.

Vinification and ageing

Aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 48% of which are new (58% French oak and 42% American oak), as well as 52% second and third-fill barrels.

The tasting

Nose

The expressive nose reveals a rich aromatic palette. Characteristic notes of violets, black fruits and tobacco mingle harmoniously with fragrances of spices, pastry, dried earth and aromatic herbs.

Palate

The ample and generous palate seduces with its fruity (black cherry, blackberry, black plum) spicy and vanilla aromas. This wine harmoniously blends precision, concentration and structure with a rare liveliness, freshness and finesse.
