Vinum

Beautiful bouquet, eucalyptus and minty herbs over pure cassis fruit, cherries; juicy and fresh on the palate, the tannins of Cabernet Franc are somewhat reminiscent of a Loire wine, on the edge of ripeness and precisely for that reason full of character and breed.

Decanter

Very floral and highly perfumed on the nose. Supple and agile, this has weight and a super smooth texture—quite tart and high in acidity though, with liquorice, aniseed, clove, and some wet stone minerality that gives the fine tannins a real chalky grip around the mouth. It’s a little austere and youthful, but it has structure and muscle and lots of ripe fruit as well as freshness. Not charming and welcoming but sleek, straight, and focused. Ageing 14–16 months in one-year barrels. pH 3.8.

Cherry blossoms, chocolate, plums, black cherries, and flowers create the aromatics. Medium-bodied, silky, elegant, and fresh, with a voluptuous texture that sets the table for the chocolate-covered black cherries, plums, and truffles. The wine is perfectly balanced between its freshness, and its opulent nature. There was a time when second wines were simply second wines. Clearly, that is no longer the case. You can enjoy this on release and for the following 2 decades after that. The wine blends 50% Cabernet Franc, with 50% Merlot. Drink from 2027-2042. 93-95 Pts.

Falstaff

Dark ruby, an opaque core with purple reflections, and a subtle ochre rim. Delicate herbal savouriness, ripe cherries, a hint of blackberry and liquorice, with candied orange zest in the background. Medium complexity, cherry, ripe tannins, mineral and saline, a hint of nougat on the finish, a substantial food wine.

Weinwisser

50% Cabernet Franc, 50% Merlot. A fine, very delicate bouquet of redcurrant, sandalwood and light tobacco, followed by cranberry juice and coriander, with hints of iris. On the elegant palate, a silky texture, playful yet taut freshness, a tightly knit tannic framework and a straight, linear body. The focused finish shows red berries, heather and refined minerality.

Precise carved quality to this Petit Cheval, with gorgeous vibrancy to the tannins, savoury cassis and blueberry fruits, edged with sage, fennel and lemongrass, and grilled, mouthwatering spices on the finish. Drawn from five plots in 2023. Pierre Olivier Clouet, director, yield of 40 hl/ha, 10% of overall production, harvest from September 6 to October 3.

Le Figaro Vin

Score: 92–94. On the nose, there are pure, enticing notes of violet and black fruits, with a sweet touch. Dense and voluptuous on the palate, the wine shows superb suppleness, like rich silk brocade, with an incredibly flavorful texture.

The nose is beautifully composed—precise and concentrated—offering depth, creaminess and spot-on intensity. It reveals notes of creamy boysenberry, violet and, more lightly, Punjab pepper, alongside touches of blueberry, fleshy blue fruits, as well as fine hints of freshly roasted red berries, tonka bean, star anise and blond tobacco. The palate is beautifully handled: fruity, fleshy, juicy and indulgent, nicely defined, silky, supple, airy and delicate, with a melodic feel and a gentle energy. It shows notes of fleshy/juicy blackberry and vibrant, fleshy blackcurrant, then more lightly crushed red berries, with touches of fresh, fleshy blue plum, plus hints of star anise, lily, fresh lilac, toast, sweet blond tobacco, a fine cocoa bitterness and roasted nuances. Lovely definition, juiciness and suppleness, with an airy character within its richness, an iodine-tinged thread and chalky tannins. A graphite edge on both nose and palate, with a lovely silky feel from the cabernet frac. Saline. A soft finish on the back of the palate/persistence, with very fine length.

93-95. Barrel Sample. This second wine of Cheval Blanc is produced from four separate parcels that can change each year. It has dense black-fruit aromas and great spice and layers of acidity. The wine is balanced, concentrated and likely to age well.

James Molesworth

Offers a seductive, crumpled velvet mouthfeel, along with gently steeped black cherry and black currant fruit flavors laced with alder, sweet bay and warm stone notes. All that in a generally forward and accessible package, though there’s enough to merit mid-term cellaring. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2035. 1,250 cases made, 90 cases imported.

Freshness and ripeness sit side by side in Petit Cheval’s bouquet. It reveals both mineral and fruity nuances, with notes of cherries and plums, complemented by hints of peony and petrichor, as well as peony aromas. Creamy on the attack, the wine is silky and powerful. A wine that can pride itself on its texture, finesse and persistence. It has the class of its elder, but it makes you want to pour it into glasses right now. A wonderfully high-level wine. You can see why there’s only 10% of it! At this level 😉

Logo on the cork: CB Dark, intense, vibrant colour. Very aromatic nose, subtle, fruity and perfumed. Purer and more vanilla-scented with swirling. Delicate on the attack, fragrant on the mid-palate, with a classy texture; the wine melts on the palate, juicy, aromatic and delicious. Normal length. Note that since 2021, new oak has disappeared from the ageing of Petit Cheval.

Description

The elegance and balance of a second wine from Saint-Émilion

The estate

Known worldwide, Château Cheval Blanc, 1er Grand Cru Classé A, is one of the legendary estates of the wines from the right bank of the Bordeaux region. The Second Wine of the estate, Petit Cheval, offers a superb introduction to the excellence of the grand wine Cheval Blanc, with wines that are refined, powerful, with a palate of striking and delicious fruit. With a new cellar designed by Christian de Portzamparc and inaugurated in June 2011, Château Cheval Blanc continues to write the legend of the greatest wines of Bordeaux.

The vineyard

Château Cheval Blanc benefits from a unique and rare terroir composed of 39 hectares that enjoy a particular position on the plateau of Saint-Émilion. While the Saint-Émilion appellation is known for its limestone formations, Château Cheval Blanc is located on the quaternary alluvium of the Isle, a non-limestone formation with a varied texture, combining gravel and clay soils in roughly equal proportions. This particularity of the soils means that this estate benefits from soils similar to those of the greatest wines of Pomerol.

The vintage

The beginning of the year is marked by a period of great freshness that does not impact the buds that appeared at the end of March for the Merlots and the beginning of April for the Cabernet Francs. The flowering took place at the end of May under good conditions, suggesting satisfactory yields. The vineyard was spared from mildew pressure as well as excessive water stress, particularly during the two heat peaks at the end of August, thus ensuring high-quality harvests carried out from September 6 to October 3 under very good conditions.

Blend

The Petit Cheval 2023 is the result of a blend of Merlot (50%) and Cabernet Franc (50%).
