Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

This has a warm persona, with blackberry and plum confiture notes moving through slowly while scorched earth, smoldering tobacco, bay and worn leather accents fill in. Stays fine-grained in feel, with the finish showing more bass notes than treble as a meaty note checks in. Has character but may be a bit rustic for some folks. Grenache and Syrah. Drink now through 2032. 800 cases imported.

Deep-set blueberries, blackberries and a brambly, herbal thread. The purity and concentration are both impressive. Silky, polished palate. Beautiful, nutty, ripe tannins weave through lush, dark-plum flavors. Drink or hold.

Shimmering magenta. Ripe red and blue fruit, floral and spice qualities on the expansive nose, along with a suave vanilla nuance and a hint of musky garrigue. Palate-staining Chambord, boysenberry, candied lavender and cola flavors smoothly blend power and finesse and betray no rough edges. The impressively long, supple finish features harmonious tannins and an emphatic echo of sweet blue fruit.

Fairly dark colour with a purple hue. Sweet nose displaying leather, jammed plum and red berries with some pepper and garrigue notes. Dense palate, a fine backbone of tannin and acidity giving lift to the sweet fruit, and a long, dense finish.

Description

A Châteauneuf-du-Pape red wine from exceptional terroirs

The property

Named after the oratory located below its first plot, L’Oratoire des Papes has embodied the timeless alliance between pleasure and prestige for nearly 150 years. Revealing the purest and most contemporary expression of the four identity soils of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, these wines are recognised for their elegance well beyond borders.

The wine

The Clos de L’Oratoire des Papes Les Chorégies collection, available in red and white, results from a selection of exceptional Châteauneuf-du-Pape plots. Coming from old vine plots planted on rolled pebbles for the reds, these wines reveal a concentration of elegance, tension and generosity.

The vineyard

One of the main characteristics of Châteauneuf-du-Pape lies in the richness and diversity of its soils, originating from three distinct geological periods. There are limestone shards, rolled pebbles, safres and red sandstones. Faithful to this diversity, the estate adopts a respectful approach to the terroir, applying the principles of organic farming in the vineyards and favouring a low-intervention winemaking in the cellar, in order to preserve the authenticity and uniqueness of the terroirs.

Vinification and ageing

The Chorégies red wines are vinified exclusively in 18 hL foudres. The harvest, mostly carried out in whole bunches, benefits from the elongated shape of the foudres, thus offering a large exchange surface between the must and the skins during fermentation. After this, the skins remain immersed to gently extend the extraction, thanks to an infusion process. The tannins, ripe and supple, are naturally released during a maceration of 5 to 7 weeks.

The bases of the blend are aged for 12 months in foudres, 300-litre barrels and amphorae, according to the proportion dictated by the vintage, then 6 months in concrete tanks and 18 months in bottles.
