Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Riesling "Cuvée Frédéric Emile" 2020 from Maison Trimbach
Tasting
Appearance
This Riesling shows a pale, pristine hue typical of the Grands Crus of Ribeauvillé, heralding a wine of great purity.
Nose
The nose is subtle and delicate, driven by notes of chamomile and dried herbs such as yarrow, accompanied by a floral touch reminiscent of hawthorn and white flowers. This discreet palette speaks more of finesse than of aromatic power.
Palate
The palate unveils a chalky texture, inherited from the limestone soils of Geisberg, Osterberg and Kirchberg, supported by a ripe yet firm acidity that structures the whole. Flavors of citrus, herbs and white flowers blend with a pronounced salinity, evoking dissolved salts, while the long, vertical finish retains freshness and tension despite the warmth of the vintage.
Food and Wine Pairing
This Riesling naturally finds its place in haute cuisine, alongside noble fish, caviar or refined white meats. Its saline structure and tension also make it a fine match for shellfish preparations or delicate herb-based sauces.
Serving and Cellaring
The Riesling "Cuvée Frédéric Emile" 2020 follows in the tradition of the estate's great cuvées, renowned for their ability to age for more than twenty years in the best vintages.
A Dry, Mineral Riesling from the Grands Crus of Ribeauvillé, Maison Trimbach
The Estate
Based in Ribeauvillé, Alsace, since 1920, Maison Trimbach traces its winemaking roots back to 1626 in Riquewihr. Now run by the thirteenth generation of the family, notably Jean Trimbach for export sales and Julien Trimbach, who is taking over technical management, the house farms more than sixty hectares of vines spread across Ribeauvillé, Bergheim and Hunawihr, all of them certified organic since 2023. It has forged an international reputation thanks to its dry, age-worthy Rieslings.
The Vineyard
The parcels used for this cuvée are located on the Grands Crus Geisberg and Osterberg, steep slopes facing south and southeast in Ribeauvillé, in Alsace, on soils of marl, limestone, sandstone and Muschelkalk. For this vintage, grapes from the Kirchberg de Ribeauvillé exceptionally complete the blend. The vines, with an average age of over fifty-five years, are farmed organically, pruned using the Guyot Poussard method, with practices that promote biodiversity, such as the presence of sheep in winter.
The Vintage
The 2020 vintage stood out for its generally warm character in Alsace, a climatic context that could have produced heavier wines. The estate nevertheless managed to preserve the freshness and tension of the fruit, resulting in a serene wine despite the heat of the season.
Winemaking and Aging
The Riesling "Cuvée Frédéric Emile" 2020 comes from gentle pressing in a pneumatic press, followed by gravity-settling of the musts. Fermentation takes place at controlled temperature, in stainless steel tanks and old neutral oak foudres, without malolactic fermentation, in order to preserve the acidity and aromatic purity of the grapes. The wine is then aged for several years in the cellar before release.
Grape Variety
This wine is made from 100% Riesling.
