Description

A Chianti Classico as complex as it is refined

The estate

In the heart of Tuscany, nestled between the green hills of Chianti and the magnificent panorama of the Crete Senesi, lies an unmissable reference point on the Italian scene: the San Felice Estate. A true historical monument, the bishops of Arezzo and Siena were already fighting over the famous Tuscan vineyard in 714. Today, with over 150 hectares of vineyards, the legend continues thanks to the estate's unique philosophy: a quest for excellence and continuous improvement.

San Felice is also a great diversity of terroirs spread over three of Tuscany's leading appellations: Chianti Classico, Montalcino and Bolgheri. For decades, this estate has succeeded in maintaining the perfect balance between tradition and renewal, a signature that can be found at the heart of their creations.

The vineyard

This Chianti Classico Grigio Riserva comes from vineyards located in the commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga, within the province of Siena. The vines are planted on limestone soils, composed of alberese and galestro rocks.

The vintage

Marked by a mild winter, the year 2020 started its growth development very early. Unfortunately, this early start was strongly affected by a drop in temperatures at the end of March, which had a drastic impact on the Sangiovese harvest. The spring was more clement, with moderate rainfall and sunny days. The grapes quickly reached perfect ripeness and good concentration due to the low yield.

Winemaking and ageing

Following a meticulous selection process, only the best grapes are used in the production of this Chianti Classico. The grapes harvested during the second week of September and the first week of October are fermented for 18 to 20 days, followed by malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks. 80% of the wines are aged for 24 months in 60 or 90 hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels. The remaining 20% are aged in 225 litre French oak barrels. After bottling, the wine is aged for a further 6 months before being marketed.

The grape variety

Sangiovese (100%).
