Description
A second wine from Tuscany, between charm and complexity
The estate
With a renown that has extended from the Italian Mediterranean coast to the international scene, Tenuta dell'Ornellaia has established itself as one of the greatest names in Italian wine. Founded in 1981, this jewel at the heart of Tuscany is currently under the wing of the Frescobaldi family, which gave it the honourable credentials it has today. In the span of a few decades, the house’s exceptional know-how, backed by consultant oenologist, Michel Rolland, and oenologist Axel Heinz, established the reputation of these great wines worldwide, all while reinterpreting the finesse of Italian wines in a great terroir.
The wine
Tenuta dell'Ornellaia's 2019 Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia is a Tuscan wine made from vineyards in Bolgheri.
The vintage
The 2019 vintage was characterised by periods of freshness, which alternated with long waves of drought and heat. Although winter followed seasonal norms, a cold and rainy April delayed flowering by 10 days. The trend was completely reversed in June with temperatures of around 37°C. During the summer, this hot and sunny climate continued and the vines went 45 days without rain. A rainy week at the end of July nevertheless refreshed temperatures, allowing the grapes to slowly start their route towards a perfect ripeness level. Harvests began on 5 September and carried on during the month. The last week, which was cooler, allowed the grapes to preserve their great finesse as well as their beautiful aromatic freshness.
Winemaking and ageing
The grapes were gathered in 15kg crates, manually sorted before and after destemming and then lightly pressed. Optical sorting has been employed since the 2016 vintage. Vinification is plot-based and carried out by grape variety. After fermentation, which lasted for a fortnight, maceration took place for 10 to 15 days, depending on the batch. Malolactic fermentation, which was started in stainless steel vats, was completed in barrels, 75% of which were of one previous wine and 25% of which were new, within which the wine xas aged for 15 months in total. At the end of the 12th month of ageing, the wines were blended and then put back into barrels for three months. Finally, after bottling, the wines were placed in the cellar for another 6 months before being released on the market.
