Description
Tasting characteristics and advice for Casanova di Neri’s Tenuta Nuova 2019
Tasting
Color
The color reveals an intense, bright ruby red hue, with subtle garnet highlights that reflect the grapes’ optimal maturity at harvest.
Nose
The nose opens on a complex, fragrant bouquet, unveiling notes of violet and lavender alongside fresh red fruits such as redcurrant and wild berries. With aeration, the bouquet evolves toward deeper aromas of dried black cherry, plum and blackberry, enriched by spicy nuances, leather and aromatic herbs. Saline mineral touches, reminiscent of oyster shell, add an extra dimension to the aromatic profile.
Palate
On the palate, the wine unfurls an impressive structure supported by round, perfectly ripe, silky tannins. The texture is both powerful and elegant, with vibrant acidity that brings freshness and balance. The palate expresses flavors of concentrated black fruit, complemented by mineral accents and a delicate note of orange zest. The finish lingers at length on notes of licorice, spice and persistent saline minerality.
Food and wine pairings
This Brunello di Montalcino is an ideal match for game meats in sauce, notably wild boar ragù or roast duck with onions and balsamic vinegar. It also pairs beautifully with braised beef dishes, pasta with rich meat-and-mushroom sauces, as well as characterful aged cheeses such as barrel-aged Pecorino di Pienza.
Serving and cellaring
Tenuta Nuova 2019 is best enjoyed at a temperature of 16 to 17°C. This wine can be enjoyed now, but it will continue to evolve and gain in complexity until around 2050.
A powerful, elegant Brunello di Montalcino from Casanova di Neri
The estate
Founded in May 1971 in Montalcino, Tuscany by Giovanni Neri, Casanova di Neri covers around 500 hectares, including 63 to 75 hectares of vineyards spread across seven crus. His son, Giacomo, has run the estate since 1991. Planted predominantly to Sangiovese, the vineyard also explores Cabernet Sauvignon in Pietradonice, with an exacting pursuit of the finest terroirs.
The vineyard
Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova comes from a specific vineyard located in the southern sector of Montalcino, at an altitude between 250 and 300 meters. The vines enjoy south and southeast exposures on soils made up of friable calcareous marls mixed with gravel, offering exceptional drainage. The presence of onyx fragments enriches the terroir’s mineral composition. The vineyard is surrounded by natural Mediterranean vegetation including myrtle, mastic, thyme, broom, juniper and privet, which influences the aromatic profile of the grapes.
The vintage
The 2019 vintage is considered exceptional in Montalcino. The mild winter and adequate spring rainfall supported even budbreak. June and July brought warm, dry conditions, while beneficial rains in late July avoided any excessive water stress. August saw high temperatures that sped up veraison, followed by a mild September allowing optimal ripening. The harvest revealed grapes in outstanding health, with fine concentration, approachable tannins and preserved, fresh acidity.
Vinification and aging
The grapes for Tenuta Nuova 2019 are harvested by hand between late September and October, with rigorous selection starting in the vineyard. After destemming and optical sorting, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with indigenous yeasts. Maceration continues for 24 to 25 days with regular pump-overs and punch-downs. This Tuscan wine is then aged for 30 months in French oak tonneaux, followed by 18 months of bottle aging before release.
