Wine Spectator

Alison Napjus

An elegant Champagne, with bright acidity buoying a well-integrated range of ripe pear and white cherry, almond skin, fleur de sel and apple blossom notes. Fine and seamless, with a lingering, spiced finish. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier. Drink now through 2028. 21,722 cases imported.

Decanter

The powerful, ripe character of 2019 is on show here, with white peach and mandarin flavours framed by the toasty, savoury citrus-oil snap of the perpetual reserve. Still feels youthful and fragrant, with juicy pear, blossom and almond notes. Will show even better with another six months. 41% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Noir and 26% Meunier. 54% from the 2019 base vintage, with 36% perpetual reserve and 10% reserve wines aged in oak.

Stuart Pigott

The first impression is as invigorating as a sea breeze. I love the interplay of mirabelle, grapefruit and lychee with minty freshness and waxiness from lees contact. And all this is welded to a beautifully proportioned palate with plenty of structure, the acidity bright and the mousse lively. Very salty finish that pulls you back for more. A cuvée of 41% chardonnay, 33% pinot noir and 26% pinot meunier. Of these, 15% fermented in oak and 85% in stainless steel. The final blend contained 36% réserve perpétuelle and 10% reserve wines of the 2012–2018 vintage from oak. The dosage is 7 g/l. Drink or hold.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Very pale yellow-green with silver reflections. Delicate meadow herbs, some walnut, a hint of pineapple and mango, and candied grapefruit zest on the nose. The palate is juicy and elegant with ripe fruit nuances and a silky, already very well-developed profile. It’s creamy and lingers for a long time, making for a generous food companion. The clearly chalky character shows the vintage of the base. (PM)

La RVF

Open nose showing beautiful ripeness, lovely brilliance, generous volume, and an elegant texture. It charms with its refined style. The juice is slender, with good shoulders and all the depth of reserve wines that bring complexity. The wine is poised and refreshing.

The latest iteration of Roederer's nonvintage collection, this is tense with a fine aging character. It has richness and great fruit, a fine line of structure at the end. Drink now.

Description

The creaminess and freshness of a multi-vintage champagne signed Louis Roederer

The property

Founded in 1776 in Reims, the Louis Roederer Champagne House has remained family-owned and independent. After more than 200 years of existence, the Louis Roederer House is still in the hands of the same family. Today led by Frédéric Rouzaud, who represents the seventh generation of the lineage, the Louis Roederer House embodies the excellence of Champagne wines around the world thanks to cuvées crafted like a work of art.

The vineyard

With nearly 241 hectares of vines, the Louis Roederer House draws its strength from its extraordinary vineyard, composed exclusively of Grands and Premiers Crus in the Marne Valley, the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. A true mosaic of terroirs, the Louis Roederer House's vineyard is divided into 410 plots that reflect the full diversity of the Champagne soils.

The wine

In order to take the quality of the house's multi-vintage blends even further and to bring more transparency to the blends, Louis Roederer has embarked on a new approach with the creation of Collection.

Made from grapes coming from a third each of the vineyards of "La Rivière", "La Montagne" and "La Côte", Collection consists of a base vintage, reserve wines aged in wood and wines from the "perpetual reserve" started in 2012 and which follows the principles of the solera. A supply from a rigorous selection of plots from partner winegrowers completes the house's grapes. Each edition of Collection is thus unique and yet always representative of the Roederer identity and know-how.

Base vintage and reserves

244 for the 244th blend of the house since its creation. Collection 244 by Louis Roederer is a cuvée made from the 2019 vintage to which 10% of reserve wines aged in wood (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018) and 36% of perpetual reserve (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018) have been added.

Vinification and ageing

35% of the blend undergoes malolactic fermentation. The dosage of this Brut champagne is 7g/litre.

Blend

Chardonnay (41%)
Pinot noir (33%)
Pinot meunier (26%).

Characteristics and tasting advice for the Collection 244 cuvée by Louis Roederer

Tasting

Colour
The colour is a beautiful golden yellow. The effervescence seduces with its delicacy and regularity.

Nose
Ample, the nose exhales fragrances of ripe fruits (vine peach, william pear) and citrus fruits (lemon, blood orange) to delicious iodine and smoky notes conferred by the ageing in wood. Supported by a beautiful freshness, the bouquet reveals chalky notes and a subtle reduction over time, hinting at the power and aromatic concentration of this champagne.

Palate
A powerful and greedy attack precedes a palate whose juicy and concentrated texture is akin to tasting a ripe fruit. Soft and enveloping, the palate seduces with its fine effervescence, its subtly roasted notes and its freshness from the chalky soils.
