The balance and purity of a Classified Growth from Saint-Émilion

A Classified Growth of 2012 of Saint-Emilion, Château de Ferrand confirms its rank among the most distinguished crus on the Right Bank in the Bordeaux region with a vintage that had many challenges.

The 2017 vintage marks the beginning of an era of renewal for the property whose origins date back to the 17th century. Located on a ridge overlooking the Dordogne Valley, the estate rests at the end of the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion.

Pauline Bich Chandon-Moët and Philippe Chandon-Moët own Château de Ferrand, which has benefited from numerous efforts and investments in the vineyard and in the winery. These have helped to embellish a vintage of already high quality, and to raise it to the highest level as one of the best wines of the appellation.

The vineyard underwent parcel restructuring to better reveal the expression of the terroir in which Cabernet Sauvignon replaced Cabernet Franc so as to take better advantage of the clay-limestone terroir. Major renovations of the Château were also undertaken, and Gonzague de Lambert took over as the head of vineyard management. Nothing was left to chance, and the quality of the wine is clearly felt.

Although the frost at the end of April 2017 damaged many vineyards in the appellation, Château de Ferrand lucked out and escaped the frost.

The growing season produced berries in a perfectly healthy condition that were of small size, and had concentrated aromas and colour. The grapes therefore had the best conditions to produce a vintage representing a quality wine.

With elegance and purity, the Château de Ferrand 2017 illustrates its profile through revealing all the beauty of the Saint-Émilion appellation.

The blend reveals all the fruity and greedy expression of Merlot (81%) with red fruit notes while the signature of Cabernet Franc (19%) expresses warm spicy notes. There is solid tannic structure while keeping a beautiful roundness on the palate. The fresh, fruity aromas evolve in perfect harmony with a perfectly balanced mouthfeel. A very lovely 2017 vintage from Château de Ferrand.

Wine Advocate-Parker :
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 de Ferrand has quite an herbal nose to begin, with bay leaves and sautéed herbs over a core of Morello cherries, blackberry pie and black raspberries with touches of garrigue and fallen leaves. Medium-bodied, the palate has a notable herbal streak with a chewy texture and an earthy finish.
