Description
The freshness and aromatic intensity of a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé
The estate
Grand Cru Classé de Saint-Émilion, Château de Ferrand is an estate with a unique charm, overlooking the Dordogne Valley. Built in 1702, Château de Ferrand is a superb example of classical architecture.
The vineyard
Château de Ferrand is a Saint-Émilion wine made from a 42-hectare vineyard, 32 hectares of which are in production in a single block. The vines are located at the end of the Saint-Émilion limestone plateau, on a ledge overlooking the curve of the Dordogne Valley. This location allows for excellent drainage of the soil by runoff, which, combined with the ideal altitude and exposure, gives rise to great Saint-Émilion red wines.
The vintage
2022 is the second year of conversion to organic farming on the estate. The winter was particularly mild and dry, which advanced an early budburst to begin in early April. Episodes of frost hit the region on 2 and 3 April, but the high position of the vineyard protected the Ferrand land. The extreme conditions of the hot, dry summer of 2022 were mitigated by the clay-limestone terroir of the estate, which limited water stress. Harvesting began on 5 September and ended on 5 October in ideal weather conditions with warm days and cool nights. This is the earliest vintage in the history of Château de Ferrand.
