Description

A balanced and silky Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion

The estate

Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé since 2012, Château de Ferrand is a property with unique charm, overlooking the Dordogne Valley. Constructed in 1702, Château de Ferrand boasts a superb architecture in a classical style.

The vineyard

The Château de Ferrand vineyard covers 42 hectares in total, out of which 32 hectares of productive vines in one piece. The vines are planted at the end of the limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion, on a ledge overlooking the curve of the Dordogne Valley. This location allows for excellent drainage of the soil by runoff, which, combined with an ideal altitude and exposure, helps produce fantastic Saint-Émilion red wines.

The vintage

A surprisingly mild and dry winter preceded a spring marked by an early, rapid and even bud burst. During April and May, unusually cool temperatures and heavy rainfall slowed down the early development of the vines, which resumed in May at a normal rhythm. Flowering was even across the estate vineyards. The particularly hot and dry summer did not damage the vines, thanks to the good drainage of the estate's clay-limestone soils, which guaranteeing sufficient water reserves. Veraison was observed around July 13. Rainy days at the end of August refreshed the soils and allowed the vines to complete their vegetative cycle. The beginning of September was marked by a significant heat wave, though the well-draining soils of the property once again protected the vines from damage. The harvest began early, on September 14, and yielded grapes of high quality.

The blend

The Château de Ferrand 2020 was made from a blend of Merlot (74%), Cabernet Franc (25%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (1%).

The tasting

The Château de Ferrand 2020 reveals a crystalline colour and a radiant nose. Balanced and beautifully fresh, the palate seduces with its floral and fruity aromas, its velvety feel and silky tannins. This is a refined wine with a subtle balance and beautiful aromatic richness.
