Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for Château Léoville Poyferré 2005
Tasting
Colour
This wine has a deep, limpid dark garnet colour, lit up by bright vermilion highlights that reflect its graceful evolution.
Nose
The bouquet is remarkably complex and concentrated, opening with intense notes of black fruits such as blackberry, blackcurrant, blueberry and black cherry. It then gains subtle hints of cedar, blond tobacco, liquorice and chocolate, lifted by a fresh touch of eucalyptus and mint.
Palate
The attack is generous and full, revealing a dense, fleshy structure. Though firm, the tannins have a remarkably silky, velvety texture. The wine unfolds into a very long finish, carried by lovely freshness and an elegant mineral backbone.
Food and wine pairing
This great wine will pair beautifully with roasted or braised red meats, fine poultry and game birds. It will also elevate delicately spiced dishes in sauce and mushroom or truffle garnishes, and is an ideal match for hard cooked-pressed cheeses.
Serving and cellaring
With exceptional ageing potential, this wine is built for long cellaring and can be enjoyed until around 2055.
A Saint-Julien wine combining power and velvety texture
The estate
Located in the heart of the Saint-Julien appellation in Bordeaux, Château Léoville Poyferré was officially founded in 1840, following the division of the historic Léoville estate. Ranked Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855, this prestigious vineyard now covers 80 hectares. Owned by the Cuvelier family since 1920, the estate is currently run by Sara Lecompte Cuvelier. Combining respect for tradition with modernity, the property stands out for its environmental commitments and produces wines renowned for their power, elegance and incomparable velvety texture.
The vineyard
The estate's terroir covers 80 hectares within the Saint-Julien appellation. The vines, with an average age of 26 years, are planted at a high density of 8,700 vines per hectare on Mindel-era gravel terraces over a clay-sand subsoil. The vineyard is trained using traditional double Guyot pruning. Mindful of its ecosystem, the estate has been committed to an Environmental Management System (EMS) since 2016 and has held High Environmental Value certification (HVE 3) since 2017.
The vintage
The 2005 vintage was marked by particularly favourable weather conditions, with dry, sunny days throughout the growing season, yet without any heatwaves. This absence of heat stress encouraged slow, even ripening of the berries. The harvest took place from 26 September to 8 October 2005, with a yield of 45.16 hectolitres per hectare.
Winemaking and ageing
For this vintage, the grapes were hand-picked into small crates, followed by rigorous hand-sorting of whole bunches and individual berries. Vinification was carried out plot by plot in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The wine was then aged for 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels, 80% new and 20% previously used for one wine. Finishing practices included traditional racking and egg-white fining in barrel, before bottling between 28 May and 8 June 2007.
Grape varieties
This vintage is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot.
