Tasting
Appearance
The wine displays a bright ruby red colour, enhanced by delicate violet highlights.
Nose
The nose opens with aromas of ripe fruit such as black cherry, raspberry and plum. It then develops floral notes reminiscent of violet, harmoniously blended with subtle hints of undergrowth, earth and gentle oak-derived spice.
Palate
On the palate, this medium-bodied wine unfolds precise yet silky tannins, supported by lively acidity. There is a remarkable balance between fruit richness and mineral depth, leading to an elegant, long finish.
Food and wine pairings
This red wine is an ideal match for roast poultry such as pigeon or duck, as well as delicate meats like saddle of venison with wild mushrooms. It also elevates slow-cooked dishes such as boeuf bourguignon and pairs perfectly with characterful mature cheeses like Époisses.
Serving and cellaring
Crafted to evolve gracefully, this Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Clos Prieur" 2023 has excellent ageing potential. It can be cellared for a decade or more to reveal its full complexity.
The finesse and structure of a Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru
The estate
Officially founded in 1919, although the family's winegrowing history dates back to 1859, Domaine Trapet is an essential benchmark. This historic estate is located in the renowned Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, in the heart of Burgundy. Today it is passionately run by Jean-Louis and Andrée Trapet, together with their sons Pierre and Louis. The vineyard covers 18.5 hectares. A pioneer of environmentally conscious winegrowing, the estate has been certified biodynamic since the late 1990s. It stands out for its deep commitment to preserving the genetic diversity of Pinot Noir and for its pursuit of authentic wines.
The vineyard
The Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Clos Prieur" comes from a tiny 40-are plot divided into two parts. Planted at the foot of the slope in the northern part of the village, these vines are the oldest on the estate. They grow on a terroir with a limestone subsoil and clay nuances. The entire plot is farmed according to biodynamic principles, ensuring a pure expression of place.
The vintage
The 2023 vintage was marked by exceptional heat, which encouraged a rapid growing cycle and early ripening of the grapes. These weather conditions demanded constant attention in the vineyard to preserve the natural tension and freshness of the berries.
Winemaking and ageing
The making of the Gevrey-Chambertin 1er cru "Clos Prieur" 2023 begins with a cold pre-fermentation maceration. The grapes are partially destemmed, while a significant proportion of whole bunches is retained. After fermentation, the wine is aged in oak barrels, with a carefully adjusted proportion of new wood.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir.
