An elegant and well-balanced Italian red wine from Tuscany
The estate
Established in 1978 in the heart of the Maremma Toscana, Fattoria Le Pupille cultivates 80 hectares of vines. Since 1985, Elisabetta Geppetti has led the estate with her husband Stefano Rizzi and their children Clara and Ettore, the head winemaker since 2019. Located between Scansano and Magliano, the estate grows Sangiovese, Alicante, Ciliegiolo, and Bordeaux varieties on sandy soils rich in sandstone. The estate distinguished itself as early as 1987 with Saffredi, a legendary Super Tuscan, and offers a remarkable range including Poggio Valente and Morellino di Scansano, combining Tuscan tradition with international excellence.
The vineyard
Poggio Valente comes from a 10-hectare vineyard located in Pereta, in the municipality of Magliano in Toscana. Planted at 350 meters above sea level with a southwest exposure, the terroir features rolling soils where a sand-rich top layer rests on a subsoil of sandstone origin mixed with clays. Acquired in 1996 by Elisabetta Geppetti, this vineyard was replanted between 1996 and 2005 to express an elegance typical of the Maremma, perfectly aligned with her winemaking philosophy.
Winemaking and aging
The Poggio Valente 2023 harvest took place during the second half of September, with a yield of 70 quintals. Fermentation occurs in stainless-steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 26°C, followed by an extended maceration of 30 to 35 days. Total aging lasts 15 months, divided between 25% in 20-hectoliter French oak foudres and 75% in French tonneaux of 500 and 600 liters.
Grape variety
This wine is made exclusively from Sangiovese (100%).
