Description
A rich and tannic great Tuscan wine
The estate
The Frescobaldi family, a Florentine dynasty devoted to the production of Tuscan wines, has been established in this historic land for over 1000 years. Its influence grew considerably during the period of the Republic of Florence, when the city's banking industry developed. In particular, the family was involved in the great works of the time, such as the Santa Trinita Bridge and the Santo Spirito Basilica. Located in the Montalcino area, southwest of the medieval city, Frescobaldi - Tenuta Luce della Vite is one of the family's estates that produces some of the greatest wines of Tuscany and of Italy.
The vineyard
Located in the Montalcino winegrowing area, south-west of the medieval city, Frescobaldi - Tenuta Luce Della Vite, one of the Frescobaldi family’s estates, stretches across 192 hectares, of which 55 are planted with vines.
The wine
Luce 2017 is a Brunello di Montalcino wine that stems from a vineyard placed on soils rich in pebbles and sediments, with a good position facing south.
The vintage
After a mild and relatively dry winter, the end of April saw a sudden drop in temperature. Several areas of Tuscany were affected, but the sudden cold did not affect the estate's vineyards thanks to their altitude. From May to August, a lack of rain combined with extreme heat slowed down the growth cycle, reducing the size of the bunches. But providential rains at the beginning of September advanced the ripening of the grapes before an early harvest. Despite moderate yields, the vineyard was in perfect health and the grapes showed a good concentration of polyphenols and tannins.
Winemaking and ageing
Fermentation of 12 days in cement vats. Must fermentation for 22 days. Malolactic fermentation over 12 days in Slavonian oak casks (80%, in which the wine aged for 24 months.
Blend
Sangiovese (100%).
