Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Puligny-Montrachet 1er cru “Clos de La Pucelle” Monopole 2025 by Jean Chartron
Food and Wine Pairings
This Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru pairs beautifully with noble, firm-fleshed fish such as sea bass, turbot or sole, especially when served with a butter sauce or a reduced fish fumet. It is also an excellent match for shellfish such as pan-seared lobster or langoustine, as well as for white meats in cream and mushroom sauces, such as poultry with morels. Hard cooked-curd cheeses, such as aged Comté or Beaufort, complete these pairings harmoniously.

The Estate
Founded in 1859 in Puligny-Montrachet by the journeyman cooper Jean-Édouard Dupard, Jean Chartron now extends over approximately 14.5 hectares in Burgundy, planted mainly with Chardonnay. Family-owned for five generations, the estate is now run by Jean-Michel and Anne-Laure Chartron. The family has left its mark on local history, notably by having the name “Montrachet” adopted in 1873 as a suffix to the village name. The estate farms its vineyards according to organic principles, without certification, and holds three prestigious plots as monopoles, including the Clos de la Pucelle.
The Vineyard
The Clos de la Pucelle is a 1.16-hectare monopole located in the heart of the Climat Les Pucelles, a Premier Cru of the Puligny-Montrachet appellation, in the immediate vicinity of the neighbouring Grands Crus. Domaine Jean Chartron has owned it in its entirety since 1917. The vines, replanted at different times, include a core of vines dating from the 1950s and 1960s. The soil is composed of clay and limestone, providing both a useful water reserve and drainage conducive to the mineral expression of Chardonnay. The vineyard is farmed according to organic principles, without chemical weed control.
Winemaking and Ageing
For the Puligny-Montrachet 1er cru “Clos de La Pucelle” Monopole 2025, the grapes are harvested by hand and then gently pressed before the must is settled. Fermentation takes place entirely in oak barrels, with new oak accounting for around 30%, the remainder consisting of barrels between one and five years old. Ageing continues on fine lees for twelve months in barrel, followed by four months in tank before bottling, in cellars with controlled temperature and humidity.
Grape Variety
This wine is made from 100% Chardonnay, the emblematic grape variety of the Puligny-Montrachet appellation.
