Mulled black cherry and black currant fruit is liberally laced with savory and thyme notes, along with an olive edge. The cedary structure carries the open-knit finish. Drink now through 2034.

Decanter

Silver Oak's 2020 releases of Napa and Alexander Valley Cabernets are downright impressive. Tasted four years after the fires, in September 2024 at the Alexander Valley winery, neither wine showed any sign of the hardened tannic structure or overwrought fruit often associated with the vintage. Instead, these wines remain true to Silver Oak’s signature style, with blackcurrant, fig, and plum fruits layered with white pepper, sweet cedar, and coriander spice. Medium-bodied, with sculpted tannins that persist through the lengthy finish, the Alexander Valley Cabernet in particular retains all the hallmarks of a balanced, inviting, and vibrant Silver Oak red.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Alexander Valley "Cabernet Sauvignon" 2020 Silver Oak Cellars

Tasting

Color

The color reveals a brilliant ruby hue.

Nose

The nose reveals a captivating bouquet of cedar and concentrated red fruit. Aromas of fresh raspberry, cherry and cola intertwine elegantly, accompanied by notes of blackcurrant, plum and cocoa. Touches of white pepper, sweet cedar and spicy coriander complete this complex aromatic palette.

Palate

On the palate, the wine stands out for its polished, silky tannic structure that brings depth and refinement. The balance is remarkable, with a vibrant acidity that supports the rich flavors of blackcurrant, plum and cocoa. The firm, sculpted tannins persist through a long, harmonious finish, offering a tasting experience that is both inviting and vibrant. The medium-bodied character of the wine retains all the freshness and fruit expression characteristic of the Silver Oak style.

Food and wine pairing

This Cabernet Sauvignon pairs perfectly with grilled red meats such as ribeye, roasted leg of lamb or hearty stews. Its tannic structure and balanced acidity also make it an excellent companion for dishes featuring savory mushrooms and aged cheeses. Enthusiasts can also enjoy it with dark chocolate, where the wine's fruity and woody components elevate the tasting experience.

Service and storage

The Alexander Valley "Cabernet Sauvignon" 2020 can be enjoyed now but will continue to evolve until around 2038, with an optimal drinking window extending to 2042 under proper storage conditions.

Other characteristics

The alcohol level reaches 14.6%, reflecting the maturity of the 2020 vintage while preserving a harmonious balance.

A Cabernet Sauvignon from Alexander Valley true to Silver Oak Cellars' Californian signature

The estate

Founded in 1972 by Ray Duncan and Justin Meyer, Silver Oak Cellars has established itself as a key reference in California for its unique approach to Cabernet Sauvignon. For more than fifty years, the estate has focused exclusively on this grape variety, aged in American oak barrels sourced from its own cooperage acquired in 2015. Now led by David and Tim Duncan, the founder's sons, the estate cultivates more than 400 acres of vines spread between Napa Valley and Alexander Valley. Silver Oak is also a pioneer in sustainable development, with both of its facilities having earned LEED Platinum certification, making the Alexander Valley site the most environmentally friendly winery in the world according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The vineyard

The Alexander Valley "Cabernet Sauvignon" 2020 comes from several plots located in the Alexander Valley appellation, in the heart of Sonoma County. This valley, recognized as one of the warmest areas in Sonoma, benefits from the cooling influence of the Russian River that flows through the region, creating gentle alluvial soils particularly well-suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate owns the 80-acre Miraval vineyard here, planted on clay-sandy soils at elevations between 200 and 350 feet, as well as the 45-acre Red Tail Vineyard with similar soils. The historic Alexander Valley vineyard, whose origins date back to 1870, was entirely replanted between 2012 and 2013. These terroirs give Alexander Valley Cabernets a silkier, sleeker character, with vibrant red fruit and bright spice compared to expressions from Napa Valley.

The vintage

The 2020 vintage in California presented exceptional challenges, with several wildfires raising concerns about smoke taint. However, the growing season progressed remarkably well through harvest. Budbreak occurred in mid-March, followed by a warm, sunny spring with no frost threat. Summer saw only two significant heat spikes, including one during the Labor Day weekend, allowing the vines to maintain healthy, balanced growth. Low rainfall early in the year naturally reduced yields, concentrating the aromas and fruit intensity. This situation encouraged many winemakers to harvest early, thereby avoiding the devastating effects of the later wildfires. In Alexander Valley, favorable wind conditions and geographic position allowed harvest to be completed before any significant smoke exposure, ultimately producing an exceptional vintage.

Winemaking and aging

The Alexander Valley "Cabernet Sauvignon" 2020 follows Silver Oak's traditional method, with the blend assembled early, in early 2022, before the start of barrel aging. This approach allows the wine's various components to fully integrate during the maturation period. The wine was then aged for 24 months in American oak barrels from the estate's own cooperage, The Oak, located in Higbee, Missouri. These barrels receive a medium-light toast of about 40 minutes over an open flame, caramelizing the wood's natural sugars and releasing aromas of freshly baked bread and toasted marshmallows. American oak, less tannic than French oak but richer in lactones, gives the wine a creamy texture along with characteristic notes of vanilla, coconut and dill.
